The Army plans to field smart phones that can work under three wireless technologies. The project is called the Multi-Access Cellular Extension, or MACE. NextGov reports, the battlefield devices would use cellular, WiFi or military radio networks, depending on what is available at the time of need. Marilyn Freeman, the Army’s deputy assistant secretary for research and technology, tells lawmakers MACE will be able to create localized mesh networks to link phones when regular connections are unavailable. The Army is also testing smart phones at Fort Bliss, Texas. It plans to supply them to soldiers in Afghanistan.
