South Korea and the United States have canceled the planned joint naval exercise in the Yellow Sea scheduled for late October, according to a senior South Korean official. The decision was made to avoid irritating neighboring countries and to improve conditions for the Group of 20 Summit in Seoul on November 11th & 12th. The cancellation appears to be a conciliatory gesture to China to ensure its participation in the G 20 summit. This is the second major security issue in Asia in which the US appears to have deferred to China’s sensibilities. 2010 has been as a pivotal year for reassessing the dominant power in Asia.
