WASHINGTON – When college students were asked to name their ideal job, Google was the runaway winner. But plenty of federal agencies also earned votes for “most desirable employer.”

Universum, an international business consulting firm, ranked Google No. 1, followed by Apple, Walt Disney, the U.S. State Department and Amazon in its 2010 survey.

The FBI, Microsoft, CIA, NASA and Teach for America rounded out the top 10.

Engineering majors rated NASA best, followed by Lockheed Martin, Google, Boeing and General Electric. The U.S. Department of Energy was ranked seventh.

Information technology majors put Google in the top spot, followed by Microsoft, Apple, IBM and Cisco Systems. The FBI and NASA were also in the top 10.

Those majoring in the natural sciences put the National Institutes of Health at the top, followed by the Mayo Clinic, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , American Cancer Society and the Peace Corps. The top 10 included NASA and the FBI.

Federal agencies had their strongest showing among humanities and liberal arts majors, with Teach for America leading the list, followed by the State Department, Walt Disney, Google and the Peace Corps. The top ten also included the FBI, CIA and NIH, with the National Security Agency in 11th place.

About 56,900 students from 345 universities participated in the survey.
