Smaller budgets have become a reality all over government, and now research and development is feeling the pinch.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science says agencies are shelling out almost two billion dollars less this fiscal year — most of it because of defense cuts.

Matt Hourihan leads the association’s Research and Development budget and policy program. He joined The Federal Drive with Tom Temin with a look at federal spending in R&D.
