  • CHAINED CPI
    Kenny Ray
I would gladly take the Chained CPI in exchange for an iron clad guarantee from Congress (I know that's naive) that they will leave the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) program ALONE. That also includes not opening it up as an insurer for everyone else. The FEHB is part of the compensation program for federal employees, it is not a public assistance program, contrary to what the fed bashers espouse.

I guess Roger F. doesn't do the grocery shopping which is why he hasn't noticed extreme cost increases even in basic items. The chained CPI says buy a cheaper product, i.e., switch from bananas to no fresh fruit because there isn't much fresh fruit cheaper than bananas. I guess he hasn't looked at medical expenses, either, like OTC products. The chained CPI is a disaster and a breach on contract for all retired feds, military retirees, social security recipients. If Congress and the White House are hell bent on enacting it, they should grandfather current retirees and set a future date for retirees that will be affected.

  • Chained CPI
    Moderate
I agree with you Marien except that it should not be put in at all. Chained CPI does not measure inflation because inflation measures the cost of a particular item and not its lesser quality substitutes. Also, you can bet that any promises the politicians make for concessions will not be kept. They have already reduced retiree benefits from the time I first started.

I guess Will with the Air Force is also used to a hefty boost to his income based on his location cost-of-living adjustment so he, too, can be cavalier about the chained CPI. Maybe Congress should take a look at that uncontrolled plum to military officers - not only the money they get to move, the the high location cost-of-living boost they get. How about living on the economy wherever your duty station is based solely on your salary, no location bonus. That's how the rest of us live - we don't get the location cost-of-living bonus and the chained CPI will cut our income even more over time. I wish these folks who think losing money from retirement over time is OK would take a look at how millions of folks live - close to the poverty line, trying to make ends meet. These are folks who worked all their lives, too, by the way.

And it contains Chained CPI (lower COLAs however you want to describe them) plus step two of means testing of any public benefit. This will make reduce govt payments in lieu of making the tax code more progressive, to save money. Right now the push is to get people off the rolls and into fixed income. Then they will reduce your COLA. When all this is done we won't have deflation but inflation as people substitute chicken for beef, then corned beef hash for chicken, to survive. As energy, health care and taxes skyrocket, those who are living on the edge will be in big trouble and need to take in boarders or be a boarder. We will be transformed into the third world where those at the top, and the remaining military elite live well, while everybody else starts sharing housing and vehicles just to have money for food. These are the good old days, and living below your means will help. Dump that timeshare now!

The picture you paint was part of the plan and should come as no surprise. What we're witnessing is the "transformation" of America.

Clearly WIll and Roger are NOT living on a fixed income; that is apparent from each statement. Once reality sets in for them it will be too late to "give it a try." The CPI will only become the first step toward the erosion of the Federal Retiree's income to pay for the billionaire bankers, and industries we have bailed out. Adding insult, those CEO's are getting multimillion dollar salaries and bonuses at the expense of all tax payers. So Mike, I propose that we establish a chained "MPI" that reduces everyone's mortgage payment by the equivalent CPI reduction. That will be reality.

  • Always cut Govt employee costs - When do the contractors get theirs? NARFE public TV ads?
    Honest Broker
We Govt employees must be an easy mark for the politicians. Why does not NARFE put out a TV ad showing the Govt folks do not have this perceived gravy train being portrayed by the politicians? Why not show that the contractor labor costs the Govt 2 to 5 times more? Use the POGO.ORG statistics and mention that Congress and Senate just ignore POGO's warnings because they get cash back from the contracted company CEOs. Remember that Booze-Allen was getting paid $250K-$300K for Snowden as an IT Admin person. Where in the public do you see charges that high for a GED community college IT person? I saw on the news that the Govt purchased a room full of CISCO 3945 routers for $1.5M at $20K apiece, but on Amazon they sell at $5K to $10K. There were 2 problems with that story - First, Govt outsourced IT a long time ago so some contractor made that mistake and is not paying for it; second, the Govt paid almost double the price when it should have gotten a discount. NARFE needs to change their tactics and educate the public on the waste, fraud and abuse the politicians promote instead of lobbying those same individuals that would rip off Joe Taxpayer. I'm cutting out my NARFE account next year and I would advise others to do the same if they do not take more effective actions than their current strategies.

are all old fashioned contribution based systems. But there's not enough dough to compete against bigger loaves. I agree NARFE and others should be more creative, I'm not sure letter campaigns work either. What do you do when they don't care? I'd say Ads work, otherwise TV wouldn't be full of them.
