  • I am not sure there are a lot of options.

As I understand the rules, most options are either grounds for immediate dismissal or outright illegal for federal employees, even if they are allowed to the general public. We have no big money patrons that will strong arm Congressmen into doing their jobs. Congressmen will fignt for individual military bases, whether they serve a purpose anymore or not, but they could care less about any federal jobs in other states, and often they find them a drain on resources that could be coming to their state. DC has no representation in Congress, and even if they did, it wouldn't be enough to matter.

Status quo doesn't work, for me anyway. There are options but most people won't do it. Throughout history people have voted with their feet.

Unless Federal employees find an effective way to fight back, their pay and benefits will be eroded to the point where most good employees will leave.

  • Postal Service TV ad educates public -- NARFE take note
    Honest Broker
I'm not sure if engineers or scientists have unions in the Govt, so I have been relying on the lobbying of National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE). They claim to be fending off cuts, but it looks like their efforts are ineffective. I think they should take the lead of the US Postal Service and start an advertisement campaign address the misinformation and which politicians are doing it. For starters, how about the part we (Govt) are overpaid. POGO.ORG continues to challenge that fact with data showing at least 2 times more for contractors and upward of 5 times in some types of jobs. What about the myth we get free health care? My BlueCross/BlueShield plan is anything but free or cheap. NARFE redirect your funds in those ads as we get closer to election day and point out the upcoming politicians that really want to address Capitol Hill corruption and quit blaming Fed employees.

  • Yes, do write your representatives but they don't seem to listen
    Honest Broker
Yes, I write my 2 senators and congressman along with those in other states. Unfortunately, I don't think the listen because their response says they are glad for my input and they are looking into it, then they go blast Fed Govt employees. It's like the Simpson's character Apu at the Kwiki Mart, "Thank you, come again" with no intent of concern.

  • We Can and Will Fight Back
    Remember When
As a long time Fed, it irritates the poop out of me when I see taxpayers standing in long lines waiting for assistance in offices that used to be fully staffed. It irritates the poop out of me when I have to explain for the 1000th time that we can only hire if congress gives us the funding. I also tell them to write their congressmen/women and complain because we are doing the best we can with what we have. Not only is the Fed hurting, but so are the taxpayers.

  • We Can and Will Fight Back
    Remember When
It hit the submit button way too soon.... it also irritates the poop out of me when when offices which used to be open at lunch have to close just to give the 1-2 people a break from the long lines. These same offices used to be fully staffed and open during lunch, yet all the while Congress in on vacation. The only vacation that most of the Feds got this year was a couple of unpaid furlough days -- not exactly anyones idea of vacation. When election time rolls around again, I will vote for any newby on the ballot. You couldn't pay me to vote for any of the current representatives because again, regardless of what a good ol' boy they are in Po-dunk anywhere, they are worthless once they get to Washington because it's turned into a "you-scratch-my-back and I'll-scratch-your-back" city. No morals, no values, no ethics -- our current congress only looks at what they can get out of it. Seriously, a newby couldn't do any worse. I have never been a political person, but here lately I find myself talking more and more about politics to my family and friends (all while staying within the "ethical" boundaries), because I want my family and friends to make good decisions when they vote. Our current congressional staff is pulling in millions and millions of dollars all the while not just Feds, America is struggling - higher gas prices, higher grocery bills, higher everything. And please please explain to me and everyone else why we send billions and billions of dollars to foreign countries; why we outsource everything now; why we can't keep American owned companies in business; why bankers and brokers are getting millions in bonuses; why the rich are getting richer and the poor poorer. Again, we need to clean house and start all over. I read an article somewhere where there was a petition being circulated for some states to separate from the union again and IF that ever happens (but I'm standing overhere in reality) and my state becomes independent, then I'm running for congress and will have my headquarters at the local county breakfast hangout where real people gather to talk about politics and what's wrong with this country. From us old Feds on down, we have fantastic ideas of how to fix Washington and this country, but sadly no one is listening so maybe they'll listen come election day. All we can do is try...
