The VA is an excellent example of how separate isn't equal and how a government benefit can become a curse. Just about every veterans benefit program has been tossed into the VA. The organization has become huge and without focus. Other government agencies already have more talent, more infrastructure, and more contances and oversight in many of the fields the VA attempt to work in. Small business programs are just one example. They try to provide independent medical care for veterans in a time where the private sector has taken over. There are very few VA clinics that are not near a better equipped and run local hospital anymore. Sending that program over to Medicare could be a viable solution for those problems. I am sure there are other situations this would also be true. The veterans would likely be better served and so would the taxpayers. The VA should focus more on training and preparing Veterans for transition to civilian life and verifying status for other agencies.
