  • Thank you! Now about those performance awards...
    David L.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that the furloughs canceled. I would like to see every IRS employee send a thank you e-mail to Principal Deputy Commissioner Werfel. While they are at it, they should take the opportunity to ask him about our hard-earned performance awards. Do we get those back too?

  • Trade the awards for the furlough days

No. You should not get those performance awards. We were stuck with 3 furlough days so far. management could still impose more of them. By not having the performance awards IRS has more money which could allow us to avoid furlough days. Why should the 45% of the unawarded employees subsidize the 55% who get the awards by forcing us to take furlough days? Basic pay should be paid first before awards. Furlough days come out of basic pay.-----I have tried to push the NTEU to give up cash awards so we will not have more furlough days. NTEU ignores my position. Therefore, NTEU is taking money out of my pocket. It makes me question whether I want to be a part of that union.

I have worked for the IRS for nearly 27 years in IT. So, to quote Mr. Spock in The Wrath of Khan "The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few or the one." So, in this case the needs of 90,000 employees not to lose any more pay due to forced furlough days out weighs the need of the minority of the NTEU members at the IRS to receive a performance award (which many take as time off awards). The Union should concede that the IRS management has the right to use the award money to offset the severe Budget shortfall caused by the Sequester and two years of no budget (continuing resolutions).

  • Can someone do the math for me...
    Remember When
... your report stated "which will net the agency about $98 million in savings" - ok, I get that, but if you do the math, according to your report, there are approximately 90,000 employees which would equate to about a million per employee. Now, I've been here a long, long, long time (30 years actually) and I've never gotten a million dollars. You could add up all 30 years of performance awards and you'd be hard to come up with $20,000. Don't get me wrong, the majority of the employees deserve an award for their hard work and dedication and honesly, I wouldn't turn the million down, but come on, there is no way those figures could be correct.

$98 Million divided by 90000 is a little over $1000 per employee. Not a million.

  • Be more accurate
    Moderate
Where do you get your numbers? Try 100,000 employees. Try about $120,000 per employee. Please do not forget contractors who are not employees, capital items such as computers, and many other non salary expenses.---Please be more accurate in your assertions.----Oh, I do agree that cash awards should not be given out during sequestration.
