    The sad truth is that no one cares except those considering retirement in the near term.

  • Know About Your Options
    With the early out/incentive offers, it's important to educate yourself about your options. Don't sit back and depend upon HR to explain everything you need to know. Its your responsibility to look out for your own best interest. The folks in HR, though well meaning, are often overworked and sometimes don't devote enough time to thoroughly research your particular case. In my case, I received an email from HR which stated I was eligible for a VSIP. I'm one year from eligibility for a voluntary retirement (30 years), so I requested an estimate. The estimate neglected to annotate the hefty lifetime penalty for retiring before 30 years of service; nor did it mention I would not qualify for the FERS annuity supplement. In preparing for retirement, it's critical to educate yourself on your benefits and options.
