  • Contracting Out Costs More
    Radar Tech
According to the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) report "Bad Business", contractors costs the government 1.8 times as much in total average annual compensation than a federal worker doing the exact same jobe. There are more than 4.2 contractors for every federal worker. So the cost of contracting out is about 8 times as much as just having federal workers do the job. POGO is a non-partisan and non-profit organization. Now we know why 3 years of federal worker pay freezes hasn't brought the budget down or reduced the deficit. Contractors have had no corresponding pay freeze. Perhaps sequestration budgets will finally bring this discrepancy to light as agencies scramble to do their core missions with less money. Oh, and perhaps now would be a good time to discuss the cost of management consultants...paying consultants to tell managers how to do their jobs. Really? Isn't that sort of prime evidence that those seeking the consultants do not know how to do the jobs they were hired for? Perhaps a thorough review of the performance of these managers is in order? Perhaps a restructuring of their "bonus" compensation is in order?
