The sequester and furloughs are total politics. The Dems are using FedEmps as pawns to get Repubs to raise taxes again. The Repubs want to cut some of those trillions in deficit spending. They can't agree so instead of targeted cuts we all get cut. The stock market seems to love it.

The Dems are not using the feds as pawns. The Republicans will not allow the proper funding of government. Thus we have sequester. These are the pay cuts the GOP and their allies want (heritage Foundation and Cato are examples)

Where is the calculator that shows the effect of Obama's 3-year pay freeze five, 10, 20 years down the road?

It is in the same place that shows the effect of what may be the 5 year pay freeze the Republicans advocate. It is in the same place that the effects of sequester due to Republicans not allowing enough money to fund the government. It is in the same place as the effects of the 5% increase in our retirement contributions advocated by the GOP. And by the way, the GOP refused to allow any pay raises in 2013. Just a minor correction Rob.

  • CPI
    whc99
As a CSRS Retiree I am 100% in favor of it; the numbers are significant and will protect all of our benefits in the long run. The only caveat I will add to my comment is that Congress must control spending in other areas and not put the entire burden of savings on Federal employees and retirees only.

  • start with the green energy
    Rob
I think Fisker Automotive is on the Hill today to break the news to Congress that they won't be able to repay over $200 million in tax payer dollars that was given to them as part of Obama's green energy policy. Add in Solyndra and the other 20 or so now bankrupt green energy companies and one begins to wonder why we need higher taxes. Just stop the wasteful spending for crying out loud.

Green energy is a way to reduce the usage of natural resources. It is also a way to reduce pollution. We should have looked at the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on the falsely reasoned Iraqi war.

As a future CSRS retiree, I am opposed to chained CPI. It does not reflect inflation. To reflect inflation you must compare the price of the same product, not the price of one product to the price of a cheaper product.

  • At least it hits everyone
    Linda
The only good thing about the chained CPI is it hits everyone, seniors, congress, military, Feds. Since the budget has to be cut somewhere, and I would rather it not entirely be on the backs of the Feds, I may not like it, but at least it is fairer than most the cuts. Especially the cuts that don't effect Congress at all, like furloughs. Could be worse, could only effect the Feds.

  • Shared Misery
    Radar Tech
Shared misery doesn't reduce my misery. It doesn't make it "better" that everyone suffers the same. The only thing that makes it better is if I am not suffering. We should not be cheering anything about this race to the bottom under Obama.

Chained CPI does not affect the wealthy in a material way as they donot depend on social security. The wealthy should be hit with higher taxes. The spending should be reduced when we are in the prosperity part of the economic cycle.-----The race to the bottom started well before Obama. Try guns and butter under Johnson. Try sticking it to the middle class under Reagan. That was continued under George Bush the second. Obama is trying to get the country out of George's mess.

Mike, The Prez characterized that retires would shift from steak to hamburger. I disagree. Kibbles v. Bits would be a more accurate description.
