Obama had a chance to show his solidarity when he released his 2014 budget. Another sub-par pay raise recommendation from a man who claims to be for the small guy. Oh and surprise surprise, hardly a peep from the unions. No need to reply MOD. I'll do the honors for you.....It's Bush's Depression that caused Obama to bash Feds. Does this guy have strings attached to his limbs? Oh what a puppet he must be.

If you do not like the microscopic pay raise offered by Obama, do not worry. The pay raise will surely be killed by the Republican House.

Any pay raise that is proposed will be shot down for at least another 3 years. It would not surprise me if the in step pay raises are eventually frozen or even abolished. Either way I see the federal government employee heading towards a new era whereby flatlined pay will be the order of the day. We are going to have to pay more for our health care and any tiny retirement that FERS employees receive now will be done away with the way we have known it. It is quite possible that if you want a retirement, you will have to put your money into a 401K type retirement system, i.e. Thrift Savings etc. Even at that, I can see the Federal Government cutting any matching funds into Thrift Savings accounts and federal employees will draw standard interest on their money just as they are on the outside econonmy. Big changes coming folks! I am glad I am getting close to retirement!

Unfortunately, I agree. I also see the quality of the employee (bachelor’s or master’s degree) types moving away from Government to “contractors”. I see the expense actually going up, the quality of the services the nation pays going down. You get what you pay for.

  • The good guys
    Linda
I think everyone should give a cheer, or a prayerto the good guys. The ones that ran toward the bomb in Boston, the volunteer firefighters and medical personnel who most likely perished at the Fertilizer plant I Texas, the guys out there now surrounding bomber number two in Boston risking their lives. The mail clerks who recognize and spot deadly poisons. They are all just doing their jobs, but I for one am thanks full for them.

  • Sorry - I still don't like the TSA
    Radar Tech
The TSA routinely violate the 4th Amendment. They should be replaced with state troopers that have a bomb sniffing dog and go back to the walk through metal detectors. It would cost less, be more effective, provide 100% screening of all passengers, and do it without violating the constitution. If the dog alerts, then there is probable cause for further searches...and back of the hand pat downs. There is absolutely no need for palm side of the hand pat downs. Many of the TSA that were hired were actually criminals. They have less of a background check than most of the airline employees and certainly less of a check than police and federal workers.

    retired&lovingit
Okay Radar Tech, I'm carrying a very, very sharp ceramic knive in my carry-on luggage. Gee, the dog can't smell it, the metal detector can't detect it. I guess I'm good to go! How about if you let everyone know what flight you are going to be on the next time you travel & we'll make an announcement that there will NOT be ANY security screening for the passengers on your flight - that TSA will step down & the passengers are on their own. Sounds good, eh?
    { "Agree":"1","Funny":"1","Insightful":"1","Disagree":"-1","Offensive":"-1","Troll":"-1" }
  • If you put it in the outer pocket of your coat it is still invisible to TSA
    Radar Tech
You could carry a ceramic plate on board, crack it in half and have two sharp edges. You can roll up a magazine really tight and make a virtual wood baton. Etc. You make a false choice about "NOT...ANY security screening" and the status quo. I did not call for "no" security screening. Your straw man is idiotic.

  • Unfortunately I don't think the bashing will stop
    pln
Federal workers are too easy a target by anyone and everyone. While it may slack off at times the bashing continues - and will probably receive a peak during Public Service Recognition Week. In fact it wouldn't be uncommon for a politician to say something nice about public servants at 9 AM and then resume bashing them a few minutes later.

This is why the Feds get rightfully bashed; quotes from Ronald Reagan: "Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." "A taxpayer is someone who works for the federal government but doesn't have to take a civil-service exam." "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'" “Government is not a solution to our problems; government is the problem.”

    Fred Evil
Yet another conservative who bemoans the 'awful' government, WHILE using its services! Do you like folks not breaking into your house? Thank the government! Do you like folks helping put out your house when it is on fire? Thank the government! Do you like North Korea wailing in perpetual frustration, because they are incapable of doing anything more? Thank the government! Do you like being able to go to the store and buy food you know WON'T kill your family? Thank the government! Do you like being able to own your own home? Have it inspected by a certified inspector? Thank the government! SO MUCH the government does that you ignoramuses ignore. Your EVERYDAY LIFE would be radically different without government managing a lot of very small aspects of it, and doing so well and efficiently. NO, all you care about is your selfish, ignorant little self. THE BEST THING ABOUT AMERICA IS ITS GOVERNMENT! If you don't like it, GET OUT!!!

Fred, A Government worker's goal upon hiring is to get tenure, just like a college professor, to the point where they can't get fired unless they do something illegal; (mmmm. Like stealing from the taxpayers by still collecting a paycheck, but not contributing?). Hey, look at me, I'm a tenured Government employee and you can't touch me. And besides that, WHY, pray tell, do Federal Government workers need to be "unionized"? Oh, I get it, it's called the right to "collective bargaining", which means the right for Government workers to "bargain" to "collect" all they can get from the taxpayers. Mind you, without the private PRODUCTIVE sector, you Government weenies wouldn't exist. (Whatever you don't squeeze from us, you BORROW from CHINA.) YOU Government workers exist to SERVE the PUBLIC, not vice versa. Historically, President Kennedy issued Executive Order 10988 in 1962 which gave federal workers the right to join unions and engage in collective bargaining. Congress passed the Civil Service Reform Act in 1978 that established the legal steps that federal employees could use to join unions. But Government worker's unions and benefits packages have today turned JFK's Inaugural words of: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country" into now being "Ask not what your Government can do for you, but ask what you can do for your Government." What the heck, we ("Government") don't have to worry about the cost, it's somebody else's money. I'll leave you with another Reaganism: "A government bureau is the closest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth."

  • Some questions for you, LJC
    FERS Fed
How do you know what "a Government worker's goal upon hiring is"? ..... How many private sector types ran TOWARDS the bomb blasts in Boston on Patriots Day 2013? ..... How many private sector types helped kill & capture the Boston terrorist bombers? ..... How many private sector types swear an oath to protect the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic when they begin their careers? ..... But in your world view, those who do so and expect livable wages in return are some kind of enemies of the state? ..... This may be an epiphany for you, but not everyone is motivated by your almighty dollar.

All you can do is spout platitudes about "Government" as if they are our saviors, or better yet Government is God on Earth, right? Again, without the private sector you bozos wouldn't exist. You have NO concept of the term "profit" and that's the key problem with "Government". Government is too big and needs to be reduced drastically. I agree with Rick Perry when he said he would cut the size of Government if he got into office. He'd start with the...Department of Energy, then go on to cut the ....Department of......of, ...........and then the....... ...... ....(I must be having a brain freeze...)

You are definitely clueless. The government is not a profit making organization. So our golal is not to make a profit.----The only place where the government is g-d on earth or the saviour is in your warped mind. Workers do not claim that. And you come out with "government is too big...Do you even have a clue as to what the different agencies do? You are right about one thing. Your brain is frozen.----Tenure applies to teachers, not government workers.----You appear to be anti union with your comment. Sounds like you cannot handle workers who want decent pay etc.----There is too much other junk in your comments to spend any more time with it.

And that's the problem with observers like yourself, you don't appreciate history, nor do you seem to remember it. Yes, it's 2013, eighty years after your Big Government Liberal Franklin Delano Roosevelt got into office and started his growth of Government "New Deal". Then in the 60's we saw Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" continue the growth of Government unchecked. And now today we have BHO giving us "Forward" and driving us into unsustainable National Debt to soon cause our economic crash to shipwreck us all.

Your last comment really shows you to be a reactionary. You criticize Roosevelt for big government. You obviously are clueless about why he did what he did. Remember the Great Depression. Your Republican colleagues decided tight money and no help was the best medicine for an economic downturn. By the time they were done, we were in the throes of a Great Depression. Roosevelt stimulated the economy with all of his actions. That bbrought unemployment down from 24% to 14%. When the Republicans came back with more tight money, unemployment went up to 19%.-----Of course maybe you prefer that we go back to the economy of the early 1900's when the worker was totally at the mercy of the employer. Maybe you prefer the unsafe working contitions of those times. Well most of us do not. Perhaps Obama's stimulus plan prevented a wider depression like the Great Depression.

  • Government Unions
    pln
Unfortunately LJC you don't know much about federal unions. Yes we can collectively bargain but about what? Basically anything that is not covered by federal law. This means we're pretty much limited to some workplace issues. The government union cannot bargain for benefits which have been set for no telling how many years, nor for wage increases which are recommended by the POTUS and voted on by Congress, nor for changes in the career ladder grades. Federal unions cannot strike (remember what Reagan did to the air traffic controllers who stuck - they were fired). And not every government employee is a union member even if their agency has union representation. In effect my union basically tries to ensure that all of the employees, whether a union member or not, are treated fairly by management.

  • Try $100,000 GSA Parties in Vegas and IRS Star Trek Videos...

The public (and most federal workers) aren't too happy about some of the stupidity in spending our tax dollars. Most people know that the TSA is security theater and resent having their rights trampled. They aren't too keen on intimidation from the IRS. They are pretty upset that the SEC isn't regulating Wall Street like they should and too few bankers have gone to jail for their criminal and fraudulent activities. Most people are pretty ticked off about the border fence not being done. They aren't too happy about the Katrina and Sandy response. The list goes on. It is frustrating when so many federal employees do a really really good job - going above and beyond - day and night 24/7/365 and have their reputations tarnished by idiots in senior managment throwing wild Vegas parties on the taxpayer's dime.
