  • Postal Reform

Why degrade the system? Everytime they close a processing facility, it delays mail 2-3 days. To end Saturday deliveries would delay mail even longer because there would be too much mail delivered through the week. The easiest thing to do would be to have them use the service and pay for the cost of processing mail. A private entity would not stay in business if it processed mail for free or subsidized mailers by not charging them what it costs to process their product. The US Senate recently passed an amendment that would have political mail pay for the cost of processing. This would pay the US Postal Service 15 billion annually. The PRC has asked the postal service to make periodicals cover the cost of processing. This would bring in another 1.5 billion annually. In ending, any entity cannot stay in business if they process mail for free.

If you want the postal service to be on firm footing, make it follow the same rules that apply to the rest of the Government. That is, change the retirement funding rules that are creating the financial strains. Make them follow the same rules as the rest of the Government instead of their separate retirement funding rules and you'll see the financial strain disappear overnight....
