  • BIG DEAL!
    FEDMAN
Feds still on short end of stick, and losing pay. All they did is what they should have done months ago. So now the can take Easter Vacation for six weeks. Yep, I am still bitter of the lack of our leaders to understand what their actions and in this case lack of action do to the Federal Work Force and their families. As I said Big Deal.

  • One other thing...
    FEDMAN
Trying to Open White House Tours while lower GS grade levels are struggling to make due because of furloughs, at least that did not pass, where are the brains? Priorities are all messed up, we have Feds with hardships and they are worried about tours through the Whitehouse and Yellowstone, lets get real people.

I agree with you 100%. Some people just don't care about anyone or anything other than what affects them personally. That White House Tour or their trip to Yellowstone they are counting on is all that matters to them. The heck with the people and their families who will be hurt by the furloughs. But you know what, what goes around comes around. While I don't wish bad on these insensative people, unfortunately some people won't learn what is important and what is not unless they end up in a situation where the hurt hits home.

Why is Military getting Tuition assistance when other federal government agencies have cut this extra fringe benefit out years ago.. I'm tired of being told I make to much money, yet due to them cutting Tuition assistance here and my low pay I was able to qualify for Financial Aid and student loans which I now have to start repaying come summer.

  • Politicians cannot help themselves - the money is too good
    Honest Broker
Our illustrious leadership is tied too close to the money, so any budget cuts will always go to the groups that contribute to them the least. Unless Americans can come up with a way to change this formula, it will continue until the money runs out. Anyone have any suggestions? The politicians have rigged the elections with a 2 party system and they all do not come up for re-election at the same time so they get mired down. They packed the Supreme Court with justices that think Corporations are the same thing as people, when only a small few make the decisions for the whole organization. Again, does anyone have any suggestions how to stop this train wreck? Wonder what happens when the money runs out? Stay tuned.

  • Ahhhh, the 3 year pay freeze
    Rob
The financial impact of the pending furlough pales in comparison to the financial impact Obama's 3 year pay freeze has over the length of a career. Too bad NTEU and other union folks don't recognize that minor detail.

  • More conservative bovine manure
    FERS Fed
Speaking of 'minor details', the pay freeze certainly hurts, but it's far preferable IMO to the 16% federal pay cut envisioned in Rep. Ryan's 2014 budget, or the 30%-40% cut in federal compensation that was included in Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign platform.

  • Meat Inspectors?!
    FrustratedFed
They are the only ones that Congress decided are important enough to spare from the furlough? Not Secret Service, not Homeland Security, not DoD civilians, etc.... What is wrong with these people? DoD civilians will have to cut their discretionary budgets by at least 70% - not 20%. What do they think this will do to morale, rentention, and recruitment. Is anyone worried about cybersecurity? Did these people in Congress read the news about what happen in South Korea yesterday? Our country is in trouble.

So my take is that congress "thinks" with its stomach. They worry about making sure their Big Macs are available but care nothing about National Security.

  • No, the agriculture lobby is all- powerful in Congress
    chicagoman
Rural and agricultural areas are way over-represented in Congress and that is reflected in their priorities. Note that not a single penny has been taken away from agricultural subsidies. Even those subsidies in draft bills that were to be terminated, were to be replaced and actually enhanced with more generous agricultural subsidies to crop insurance and price supports. Meanwhile, farm income has never grown so fast - there has been a massive recession for everyone else but not in the farming sector - they are living high on the hog, off the back of taxpayers. The sad thing is that most of this agriculture welfare money doesn't go to small family farms - but rather to big agro-business - the bigger you are, the more money you get from the tax payer.

  • furlough vs pay freeze
    Texas Fed Up Fed
I guess we are supposed to be so thankful that the furlough debacle my be averted at the last minute that we won't mind the extension of the pay freeze. Bottom line - federal employees get the short end of the stick again.

    Getting_FED_Up
Furlough has not been averted yet.. we are still facing a furlough come summer.. and i highly doubt we will get the 1% Obama is planning on giving us in 2014.

  • You really think Obama likes Feds?
    Mikulskiisuselss
Since Obama is the one that proposed the pay freeze in the first place, why would anyone believe he was serious in lifting it? Obama hates civil service workers as much as Psul Ryan. They have a lot more in common than people think.

Our Agency is still having furloughs so while some may have been averted (DoD, Agriculture), others have not.
