somebody actually realizes there is a huge shadow government composed of contractors? Amazing after decades of politicians crowing about having made government smaller because they contracted out what used to be done more cheaply by federal employees. All one has to do is look at the contractors sent to Afghanistan to drive trucks.

Like most of the ignorant, if not outright stupid members of the GOP, Ryan has forgotten that most of the money spent/wasted is via federal contractors, not federal employees. Then, again, Ryan and his cronies think the earth is flat, only 6000 years old, and global climate change is a hoax.

Ryan works with numbers, the numbers indicate that there is in fact a SPENDING problem in Washington. Those are the facts. Everybody in Gov is going to feel the pinch, and so are those in Gov supported programs like Welfare.. BOO HOO HOO maybe they'll lose their Obama phone. We don't have an income issue, we bring in huge amounts of revenue...we spend too much. I'm a Fed, I haven't had a raise in years but hey neither has many in the civi world either. I'm not crying. Instead I MANAGE my money. Something the Democrats have a hard time doing. Their only answer is more TAXES. well ok I'll go for that as long as EVRYBODY pays more taxes, especially those that benefit most form these programs. You see your idea would be for the people that funds these hand-outs to pay more, and for those that recieve to get more and have no obligation to pay it back. If those that give have to cut back and pay then those that take should be willing to do the same. I mean that's only "fair" isn't it? AFWIW Climate change isn't a hoax, however it's a know fact that the earth cycles and is constantly changeing w/ or w/o man. P.S. "Green" programs also cost the Fed Gov billions a year on wasted ideas, expensive buildings, and fancy electric cars nobody uses. Maybe we should un-fund those as well.

  • Yet another 'smaller government' Republican...
    FERS Fed
...suckling at the federal teat, and complaining bitterly about federal spending. ..... Maybe smaller government should start with you? Or like most conservative's, do you lack the actual courage of your convictions?

FWIW my office has been short staffed for years (as most are) Gov spending isn't all on paychecks. Last year the Gov spent over 1 trillion dollars on public assistance programs. (welfare, food stamps, cell phones) That was enough to give every person under the poverty level 62k. So you want me or the "rich" to cut and/or pay more at the same time have the Fed dump piles of money into these "assistance" programs that haven't worked? Let me also tell you that while my pay hasn't increased my expenses have. Yet I manage to pay all my bills and maintain a decent lifestyle. I suggest the Gov do the same. You love all those social programs, you love all those green energy programs you love Obamacare, however you don't want to pay for them. You want the "rich" to pay for them. You want to raise taxes on 2% of the population to fund all of your wacky dreams. I say YOU are sucking off the Gov teat, not me. I work for my money.

    FERS Fed
Federal spending that affects you is good. Federal spending that benefits anyone else must be cut, eliminated, gone! ..... Taxpayers should pay you to "... maintain a decent lifestyle", but children disadvantaged thru no fault of their own? Americans with serious health problems but no health insurance? Students seeking higher education to escape poverty? Too bad for them, you say? ..... You're a Tea Partier, aren't you? ..... "FWIW my office has been short staffed for years"? You poor dear!

Obama's budgets have been pretty much the same as Bush's last budget. The difference being the huge reduction in revenue due to the recession. Add in that Bush put two wars and the medicare prescription bill on a credit card, one can say that the GOP is as much to blame as the dems are (if not more), for the current budget crisis. Bush and the GOP destroyed the economy, but rather than take the blame, they blame spending by Obama and the federal employees. One might think only the truly gullible would fall for that ploy, but sadly the number of gullible is increasing as fast as the monies spent on education is decreasing. But the GOP doesn't care as long as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. They are bought and paid for by the special interests and care about no one but their own "kind".

  • Who do you profitts
    Sunny D
Of course he wants to reduce the number of Fed employees, so his campaign contributors can get some more cash from the government through lucrative contracts. These people are robbing us and trying to confuse people with partial numbers and statistics. Fact we spend more now then we did 20 years ago, fact we have fewer federal employees now then we did 20 years ago, fact we have far more contractors now then we did 20 years ago? Who's over paid again?

My agency is furloughing employees at the same time they are hiring new ones in the same geographic area. The only time I am not being lied to is when they aren't talking.

  • House budget
    Sam B
I chuckle every time I read about the House budget plan to reduce the number of federal employees. The House, particularly Rep. Ryan, continually goes on and on about reducing the size of government as if they care about it from an ideological standpoint. In reality, they only care about increasing the contractor workforce so the "job creators" make their profits. That's it. I feel bad for the people who actually believe that the GOP wants to reduce government because of ideological reasons/intrusion.

If the Congress and White House staff would take a pay cut/furlogh I wonder how much we would save there. Since Congress is hardly in the office anyway they should only get paid for the time they are actually there (working). If they want to save money then offer us old timers at IRS to retire early without a penalty and trust me I would be gone.
