  • Its always good to read before you hit "SEND"
    Lisa Lisa
The person that complained about having to telework on a day that they werent supposed to telework (but was scheduled for duty and not the day off) should have reread their submission before hitting "SEND". He/she should have stuck with their gut instinct which was telling them they were complaining for nothing. At a time when we as feds are trying to show the public that we are worthy and provide essential services to the public, and that the politicians have us all wrong, this is not the time for the whiners to start complaining over something so trivial-it makes us all look pathetic. You were scheduled to work, so work. I dont have the luxury of telework or even AWS. Those are perks. Dont ruin what you have and certainly dont put a big spotlight on yourself over silly things. Be thankful you didnt have to drive in. Have some humility.

Lisa you are so right. My first thought when I read that post was, "You have got to be kidding." I physically cringed thinking how that one post would reverberate through the anti-fed public an be used as proof positive that all feds are over paid, over benefitted and underworked. I hope that individual is realizing how short sighted they were being.

Probably not just active and retired Feds. So whining really never looks good. It's like complaining you got a smaller T-Bone than the guy next to you at Cattlemen's Restaurant. It's all good. Let's worry about other stuff, like furloughs and transparency.

  • "Can't Have It Both Ways" Cuts Both Ways!!

Somehow, my boss thought we should all telework that day, even though we are not permitted to telework at any other time. I politely informed him that I was unable to comply with such a request, not having completed the mandatory pre-telework training and all. You want me to telelwork when it is convenient for you, but not when it would make my life easier? Maybe that factors into the morale problem that so mystifies you, boss.

  • Not thinking on your feet
    Mr Ed
Roger, sounds like you were not thinking "now is a good time to negotiate with my boss to allow me to tele-work." Whether or not you take the mandatory telework training (and do you really need to be trained? Come on!), that does not guarantee to your boss you are productive. You need to prove it to them, document it, show them and negotiate. Right now it sounds like you are working against the system rather than making it work for you. As my Dad said "can't never could."

Your idea would work in a normal situation, but I work in a a place where telework is only supported on paper. Nobody is actually permitted to telework in reality. It is reserved for situations such as inclement weather. As for the training, no, I do not need it, but it is required to be completed prior to doing any telework. What is absolutely ridiculous is that none of the work I do is local--I actually commute to my job to telework!! Yes, I am required to be in the presence of my boss in order to access information and equipment located elsewhere (either in another building or hundreds of miles away). Your problem was attempting to apply logic to a situation that defies any logical explanation. (>.

  • Telework
    Bud
Roger, here's some advice. You can take it or ignore it.With your attitude, you won't go very far.Your boss asked you to telework, you declined.I'm doubtful your boss is now viewing you as a positive worker. You won this battle with the boss, you'll lose the war.As stated previously, you can ignore my advice.

I already know I won't go far at my current agency. That is because of the leadership. What you are asking me to do is to allow them to take advantage of me. That is not going to happen. If you read waht I wrote, telework is not an option, except during a shutdown--even though we all commute to the office in order to perform telework! I know that any improvement in my situation means finding a new position. Your advice seems sound in a healthy work environment, but as you can probably tell, I am in a pretty poisonous atmosphere. It really is an "us against them" mentality that we see from management. Does the boss view me as a positive worker? I doubt the idea of a positive worker is something he has ever considered possible. Honestly, I work with some very good people that get shafted day after day.

Roger-Wish you the best. You're on the right track trying to find another agency.Having a jerk for a boss happened to me about 3 times during my 36 year career.Stayed with the same agency but found other positions with better bosses.Good Luck!

I think you made some good points about working with the boss, but the boss should work with you. Roger wants to telework at his convenience as well as his boss' convenience. That would be the best thing for everyone.----I only telework for CPE types of things because I just cannot work cases at home. Yeh, rarely I do a little bit at home on my time, but nothing significant. I will answer emails etc at home on my time, but that is not material. I also get to take the computer home.

  • Just do it!
    MsBG
I am allowed to telework one day per pay period and I am thankful to be allowed that one day. I save 3 hours of very stressful commute time and a quarter tank of gas. I am free of the office stress as well as all of the interruptions that come with an office setting. This allows me to really focus on the task at hand. I was on admin leave Wednesday but I worked for the hours I needed to in order to make sure nothing fell behind AND I DID NOT ASK TO BE COMPENSATED. I do this on non telework days and even when I am on sick leave. I'm not asking for something for nothing, I give 110% as do a lot of Government workers. Every barrel has it’s bad apples so please don’t judge all of us based on the few bad apples in our barrel. Shame on those of you who taint our profession.

  • While you are trying to be a good employee
    wisenekt
you are actually breaking the law in terms of OPM guidance. If you are on leave, you are not allowed to work since you are technically working for free. In the upcoming furlough, if you work, you can be fired and if someone asks you to work, they can be fired as well. I get that you do not want to fall behind, but sometimes things have to break to see the real issues. Don't act like you are doing anyone a favor, you are really just making things worse.
