    Big Joe
    If they would force the Government workers to furlough two or three days a week we'd save even more money!!

    Big talk Big Joe. I just want the gov't to totally close. Shut down the FAA, air traffic control, stop mailing SS checks, veterans checks, border control, the coast guard, stops inspecting food and medicines, stop oversight of big banks, stop EVERYTHING... PERIOD. Only then will idiots that think they can live without the federal gov't and run their mouth realize that federal workers do a lot, and do a great job. Unfortunately our spineless politicians "close" the gov't but leave 80% of it open so the real effect is never known. I've put in 37 years, have worked hard and am proud of all that I've accomplished. Unless you can say the same then just shut up.

  • Big Joe - No Easy Answer - But a part time Government isn't it.
    APGQASAS
    Joe if you really think the average government worker is so valueless that we can get by with part time workers see the quality worker that you will get if the working for the government becomes underpaid part time employment. You really will get the kind unmotivated, incompetent and uncaring part timer you deserve. Actually kind of like congress - a bunch of part time, self centered, infantile, conceited, corrupt folks. Our system isn't perfect and not all of the employees get it right every thime but you get what you pay for. Some of us have gotten used to having mostly honest worker. Some government services that we have gotten used to are generally safe medical services, cleaner air, rivers that don't catch fire, planes that seldom crash/ colide, safer cars, accurate weather forcasts, GPS, National Parks and a military that with the support of the civilian workers who are generally unnoticed and unappreciated the best in the world. So Joe I really hope for all our sakes we never have to endure your idea of how governemnt workers should be compensated. You really wouldn't like the result.

    We will just let your bank grant and sell worthless mortages. We will allow you to buy tainted food. Forget border security. Who needs manned control towers anyway? Let the planes come and go as they please. Your mother really does not need to get her Social Security check on time, does she?

    umm you do know that your Savior in Chief is the one who made this all happen right? You do know he is the one who drafted this all up and he is the one that dictated where the cuts were to be made right? And you do know the Senate hasn't had a budget in over 4 years...and that they poopooed OB's budget twice? And did you know the "idiots" have put forth a few budgets that the Senate won't even vote on? Budgets that reduced the deficit, cut defense and other agencies??? So if they are idiots what are the democrats? Dolts? Clods? Intellectually Challenged?
    { "Agree":"1","Funny":"1","Insightful":"1","Disagree":"-1","Offensive":"-1","Troll":"-1" }
  • That's interesting
    cubedweller
    That's an interesting perspective, considering that the House Committee on the Budget is packed with ideologues and chaired by Paul Ryan. For them, passing a budget is a matter of political theater. They know very well that their budget will never clear the Senate, and they also know that well-meaning folks like yourself will see them as being productive whereas the Senate is sitting still. But the Senate process is subject to budget points of order, which means that they can be filibustered. Republicans won't allow the Senate to pass a budget resolution because every time they try, they are threatened with a filibuster.

    Because the only Political Theater I see is coming from 1600 Penn Ave. Paul Ryan wants to pay off our debt and balance the budget... wow that's a terrbile concept.

  • Paul Ryan's 10 year budget
    wisenekt
    was actually shown to increase the debt and did nothing to balance the budget. Obama has done more to reduce the deficit in the four years he has been in office than Ryan's budget would do.

  • Basic Math
    Goshkruse
    It would be wonderful if Republicans and their followers could do basic math then they might understand how the deficit came about. No doubt this is the reason Republicans continue to underfund education and push for $400 billion fighter jets that don't fly.

  • Education
    JHunt
    is funded by the STATE, not the Fed. Education is not a responsibilty of the Fed Gov... niether is fire/rescue, police or a number of items the Pres tends to toss out and scare you with. However the DoD is. The Fed Gov provides a tiny aount of money to states for education...most states probably would love to NOT except it because when you do you are pigeon holed into the Fed standards and all the red tape/regulations that come with it.

    On January 20, 2009, the day that President Obama took office, the total US public debt outstanding was $10,626,877,048,913. Today, the total US public debt outstanding is 16,640,135,316,625. That's an increase of $6,013,258,267,712, a far cry from what the President 'inherited', and certainly not "...more debt than all other presidents COMBINED". this president has already added more debt than any other president PERIOD. If his spending continues he will have added over 12 TRILLION dollars in 8 years. Since the debt was slightly over 10 spent by 43 presidents and he will have spent over 12 in 8, then he will have added more debt than ALL presidents before him combined. I stand by what I said. He also said the Bush admin was "Un-patriotic" for adding 4 trillion in 8 years. So what's that make him? I mean spending 6.3 in 4 years and well over 12 in 8? That's 3x what GW spent. Remember that speech about taking out a charge card from the Bank of China in the name of our children and so on.... Wanna take a stab at that?
    { "Agree":"1","Funny":"1","Insightful":"1","Disagree":"-1","Offensive":"-1","Troll":"-1" }
  • Wanna take a stab at that?
    FERS Fed
    Okay. Most of the increase in the debt has come from: (1) putting the ongoing costs of the Bush administration's two wars back into the federal budget -- both were declared off-budget 'emergencies' (when does something that lasts 10 years stop being an 'emergency'?); (2) the costs of not one, but two rounds of tax cuts (during the two forementioned unfunded wars) benefitting the wealthiest 1% of Americans; (3) the unfunded costs of another 'entitlement', the Medicare prescription benefit; (4) the costs of carrying out the stimulus program initiated by the Bush administration to bail the US economy out of the Republican's recession; and (5) the interest costs of the additional borrowing created by the four preceding items.

    so wrong...when does it become Obama's fault? The Fed spends too much. Tax revenue has increased every year since 2009... this year will be a record year and yet Ob runs 1.2 trillion in debt. You guys ae so funny, except it's not funny. He's a total failure and he's jacking up America. the top 1% already pay the majority of taxes, the top 5% pay over 70%. what would you have them pay? There's not enough money to take/steal from these people. at some point you have to CUT spending.

  • Maybe they should look into other alternatives besides pay freeze
    josephz2va
    Come on republicans. People can't pay their bills with an extended pay freeze. They have children to feed, bills to pay, rental rates are increasing, etc. pretty soon people even under 1 income source need a raise or they'll be moving south to far away low income places. Give us middle class federal workers a break.

    It IS NOT The republicans fault. THE PRESIDENT drafted this mess...it is HIS plan. Maybe if he spent a little time negotiating instead of campaigning, fear mongering, vacationing we'd have a deal. But he's not interested in that. The Repubs already gave him his tax increase w/o any cuts to speak of. Time for him and his party to step up to the plate. He has been 1.2 Trillion over budget for the last 4 years...

  • GOP is not blameless
    MichaelF
    The sequestration plan was drawn up by the Obama administration, specifically by Jack Lew. But the topic was first brought up as a general topic of conversation by Congressional Republicans during the 2011 budget negotiations. After Obama turned it into a formal proposal, the GOP jumped right on board. Who got the legislation through Congress? John Boehner! Sequestration may have been written up in the White House, but it has Boehner's fingerprints all over it -- right next to Obama's. Both the President and Congress are to blame.

    { "Agree":"1","Funny":"1","Insightful":"1","Disagree":"-1","Offensive":"-1","Troll":"-1" }
  • Huh?
    cubedweller
    How is it not the Republicans fault? Sequestration wouldn't even exist if it weren't for the ideological House Republicans. I've lost count of how many times the House has threatened to tank the American economy so they can push a purely ideological agenda, inspired by nothing more than hatred for Obama. Maybe you haven't noticed but the federal deficit has been shrinking faster than at any time since the draw down from WWII. The only reason it grew so much in the first was the economic measures taken to keep the recession from becoming a depression.

    after 36+. Now I just write sarcastic comments. I still have the Public Service fire in my belly and a righteous heart; and I'm sick and tired of hearing all these false myths about our truly indispensable Feds. This nonsense started with lies from Reagan that the media has let stand unchallenged all these years. And now because of the private sector's abject failure to provide decent working conditions, health insurance coverage, and a livable retirement wage, we in government are now told that we must abandon our program. What 2-year-old dreamed up that logical gem? Civil servants do what the private sector cannot afford to do and does not have the courage to do. It is time for a little respect. Go Feds!

    to shield the rich (top 1% of income earners) all while socking it to federal workers for cost savings. I am not saying that the bill should fall to any one group but there is more disposable income at the top than on families that will now be at a pay freeze of three years (and longer if he has his way).

    Did you miss the part where the top 1% had their taxes raised already? How much more would you like them to fund? The US doesn't have an income problem it has a spending problem. If you toll 100% of the top 1% income it wouldn't pay for OB's budget.. then what? Typical liberal rant. tax the rich they don't pay enough. I'd rather have a no pay raise than 22 days off...if those are my choices.

    22 days off unpaid and a pay freeze for a total of five years. The extension of the pay freeze for this year is a done deal, the issue at hand is whether there will be another two years behind it (as per what the Republicans are pushing).
