  • Sequestration Feint
    contrarian
Remember the sequestion is not the issue but who gets the blame. Never underestimate the power of those to wreak havoc and blame the sequestration when in fact the cuts themselves could be accomplished with virtually no pain. Today's posters got it all right, especially the Comptroller. We are pawns being sacrificed by both sides. We are reaping what we sowed when we sold ourselves to one party. Now that party (which controls 2/3 of the govt) is trying to say nothing is their fault? Get real, we just got rolled.

  • Feint?
    Moderate
No, we were rolled from 2001-2007 when one party controlled the government. That party gave us the Bush and the Republicans Depression. And they are trying to do it again with the cuts.----And speaking of control, your minority senators have just as much control, with the filibuster, as the Democrats. And lets us not forget the idiots in the House who control that part of Congress.

As a DoD employee, I can tell you that with a four day work week my work will still get done -- only not in a timely manner and with a loss of quality. How do our fighting men and women feel about going into a war zone without full and adequate support from the Pentagon? We will find out. The problem is the effect will not be felt in March, which will leave many believing the warnings of sequestration to be nothing but hype. The effect will not begin until April when the FY 13 3rd quarter begins.

  • Is this improvement?
    ben
FY2007 was the last time the Republicans controlled both houses of Congress. On a $2.7 trillion budget, there was a deficit of $160.7 billion (5.9%). Proposed FY13 budget of $3.8 trillion has a project deficit of $901 billion (23.68%) .

  • We are not in 1984. Newspeak is Alive with the Republicans.

You forget that the Bush and the Republican Depression started in FYE 2008. That is when deficits started increasing.

  • Sequestration
    Kayaker
Sequestration, I used to think the political parties would come to an 11th hour agreement but I can’t see that happening now. There is no incentive for the Republicans and Democrats to make an agreement because they both know some cuts have to be made. From the Republican perspective any cuts are better than no cuts. For the Democrats they think that not doing anything shifts the blame for budget cuts away from them on to the Republicans. For the Federal worker it means a 20% pay cut because it is easier and faster to cut salary or fire people than cut fat from programs. I would rather see a pay cut rather than chance being fired. Unfortunately this does not solve the true spending issue which would mean cutting into programs. I fear as the year moves on we will see more clashes over spending and little else being accomplished.

  • Already losing ...
    MDBBALL02
Been watching the TSP and noticing it is dropping ... lost $9,000 in 2 days already this week .... Keep it up Congress! Not only will you reduce our take home by 20% with furloughs, you will blow our TSP accounts so we have to stay longer to recoup!!!!! Where is the savings??? Wish they stayed a full 5 days a week and did some freaking work for their paycheck. When did they run for a part-time position? THey ran to Serve their constitutency in Washington--Not a part time job! If they don't take thiswork seriously, as they consistently show, they should not be employed. The mid-terms should be very interesting ... As for O'Mally being a contended for 2016--no one in MD thinks so (even Dems like me...)

  • Market Reacting to Europe, Not Congress
    ben
The market is reacting to elections in Italy, not the sequester. The Italians rejected austerity. Trouble is, that no one is loaning money to the PIGS, except for sovereign banks -- Germany and ECB. Sooner, or later, that will cease. Either, the Euro will be printed in trillions (Germany would rebel), or the PIGS leave the euro and devalue their new currencies.
