If the sequester happens, I won't be eating out evey weekend (local restaurants); I won't be buying new clothes (Macy's, Target, Penny's, etc.; I won't get my hair done 9Beauty shops/babers); I won't shop for expensive (relatively speaking) cuts of meat or buying fish (SAfeway, Giant, Wegmans, Whole foods, etc); I won't drive to see show at Dulles Convention Center (Home and Garden show/Gem show/RV show), go to movies (all theaters), or visit friends very often; I will lower the temp in my house and wear light coats, and keep the lights out as long a possible (than goodness spring is almost here) (Dominon Virginia Power and propane fuel); I will cancel the Washington Post delivery (The Post and the delivery person)and FIOS premium channels (good bye CNN and Weather channel) and cut down on phone calls (Verizon); I will stay healthy. I am one of many govvys who will be cutting back - if we go down, we aren't going alone. We are taking the local economy with us. Thank you, Congress.

I forgot to add - the repairs I had planned ot make on my house - delayed. No vacation, a staycation - using as little gas as possible. Its like throwing a stone in a pool of water - the ripples radiate out.

First thing to go was WAPO. Have given up my landline at my home, dumbed down my cable to "basic" and am turning off my son's cell phone later this month. Dining out? Forget about it! When I dropped off my cable box at Comcast the lady behind me was another Fed doing the same thing for the same reason.

  • Worst Decision I Ever Made Was to Join the Feds

Mike, Am and engineer and MBA and gave up almost $50,000 per year in salary to take a position in DoD. I was doing well, but was not rich working for a Tier 1 DoD contractor and thought the opportunity to do good was worth the temporary loss of salary. What a mistake. DoD infrastructure does not appreciate experience from the private sector and I see that I am not promotable as I didn't grow up in DoD. I am still considered an outsider. Add to that the impossiblity of managing a program in a constant state of financial churn. The disipline and experience that I can apply to the system is nullified by just trying to keep it alive. Add to that the insult of 0% pay raise. Mike, I am precisely the sort of person the DoD should be recruting from industry and I, like all other Feds, have been treated like &^%$ these past several years. If I had to do it over again - I'd stay in industry. But since I can't all I can do is recommend to others that they not make my mistake.

Work on your humility. No fed is irreplaceable.

  • Not saying I am irreplaceable...

The cemeteries are filled with men who couldn't be replaced. What I failed to communicate was that there are a lot of people such as myself who are willing to give up salary to do something meaningful. We are less inclined to do so if we are treated like second class citizens. I stand by my comment that it was an awful decision and if I could have a "do over", I'd stay in industry. And you are right, there are plenty of people who could do my job. Easy.
