...a party gets all of its ideas from polling -- the same tired ideas over and over again. ..... Is this Rep. Eric Cantor's new face of the GOP - intellectually and morally bankrupt?

Please explain what is wrong with downsizing through attrition. There would be no furloughs. No federal employee or contractor will lose their job. What is it with you progressives? Downsizing is done in the private sector all the time to save money. Do you honestly believe the federal gov't as a whole is understaffed? Give me a freakin' break.

  • Downsizing is the republican answer to EVERY problem
    Just me
The issue, Rob, isn't just that the GOP is discussing reductions through attrition. The issue is that this appears to be (a) the ONLY solution they have and (b) it only addresses one year of the sequester. What happens when FY14 hits? If you guessed that they will (again) demand staffing cuts, then you would be right.

  • and your answer to the question?
    Rob
I'm not sure where you get your news, but the GOP has offered lots of ideas to begin cutting the federal deficit. The problem is YOUR party doesn't have the stomach to cut spending at all so naturally they hate all the ideas from the GOP. Obama PROMISED he'd cut the deficit in half in his first term. Does the fact that he doubled the deficit instead bother you in the least? Oh I know, it's still GWB's fault. Now back to my question you failed to answer; do you honestly believe the federal government is overstaffed? If not, then why can't we agree to begin downsizing through attrition?

...except that it's THE ONLY SOLUTION the GOP offers for EVERY federal budget problem. Does the GOP look at anything like the inventory of M1A1 Abrams tanks, of which the US military has almost 9,000 (at a cost of $5M each), and say maybe we have enough of those? DoD itself suggested shutting down the Lima, Ohio, production line for 3 years to save a billion dollars. What did the GOP do? They said no way and threw a couple hundred million MORE at General Dynamics to keep it open. There's your freakin' break!

  • I agree, cut out the waste
    Rob
I'm totally for cutting wasteful spending including weapons we no longer need. The problem with liberals is they're only interested in military spending cuts. What about welfare spending cuts? Why is it that ABLE BODIED people are allowed to receive government assistance for basically as long as they feel? There are too many ABLE BODIED people out there who have done the math and figured they're better off collecting welfare than taking a job they'd rather not have. I know you liberals hate defense spending, but do you like the fact that people are abusing our welfare system? Why is it that the number of people on food stamps has increased so dramatically under this president (and save the GWB fault nonsense)? What is so wrong with creating programs to wean people off welfare? I can answer those questions for you. The Dems, led by Obama, know that the more people that become dependent on government the more likely they will stay in power. It's a fact that cannot be disputed.

  • "It's a fact that cannot be disputed"?
    FERS Fed
Do you have any proof of "...ABLE BODIED people are allowed to receive government assistance for basically as long as they feel"? Do you actually know anyone receiving govt assistance (much less "for as long as they feel")? Or is this one of those things that everybody 'knows' is true?

Rob..the amount of money we're burning in the DoD makes the wealth fare funding look like dimes and nickels. Let's be real here man the federal government through spending is a wealth fare itself for the private companies. Every quarter they all stand out like little pelican chicks with their mouths open waiting for the feds to dump their use or lose cash. You want to start talking about government waste? I have 230k of your tax dollar I need to blow by March....

  • $1 Billion a day
    deployed decoy
Plus or minus a little. To pay off the current debt in 50 years (assums zero interest). It takes a combo of savings and cash flow increase of about $1 Billion a day. Now would someone please tell me that locking up and shutting down the entire federal Govt (including all social bennies and DoD well except for attack subs) and a 20% nation wide sales tax would even come close to this amount. We are not leaveing this mess to our kids. We are leaving it to the species that replaces humans. Because at $1 a second (opposed to the about $10,000 second for 55 years I used in the billion example.) it is going to take 550,000 years to pay off. And, we are not even close to that $1 a second amount now.

  • the sequestration plan was actually Obama's idea ...
    Silence Dogood
I realize knowledge is a cumbersome little detail, but we have to let it get in the way in order to accurately assess the blame here: Republicans passed several budgets that Obama and Reid simply ignored. It was Obama and the Dems that proposed the sequestration bed, so now let them sleep in it! All the GOP needs to do at this point is remind the public of the several budgets they passed that Obama and Reid simply ignored. And all those that get furloughed can thank our mighty leader, his party, and all the fools that voted for him and the taxpayer handouts. Let it rip!.....

  • Sequestration may have been Obama's idea
    Fedweb
But it was still put in place by a group of Congresspeople who refused to compromise on spending and taxes. Obama's misguided belief was that said Congresspeople would find the idea of sequestration so horrifying that they would feel compelled come up with a plan to avoid it. What he didn't realize was that neither party is willing to move off of their base position of 'taxes are off limits' on the one side and 'entitlements are off limits' on the other ... and here we are. Again. Reduction through attrition makes perfect sense, and is far preferable to furloughs or a mandated RIF.

  • Uh, pretty sure that...
    FERS Fed
...these reductions through attrition will be IN ADDITION TO furloughs because the reductions through attrition are only to save DOD's hide, which will do nothing for the civilian agencies that are planning furloughs. So, do you still find that 'far preferable'?

  • What is this?
    kenifer47
A plan that makes sense coming out of Congress, and put forward by Republicans? Federal employees are retiring or moving on by the thousands each month. Don't replace them, move billets around to get the job done. Good managers do it all the time. There is NO need for furloughs. Congress will NEVER vote for it's own pay freeze. That will not survive if this does. Finally, thank you Steny Hoyer for being the only member of the Maryland Congressional contingent for saying something about how the federal workforce has been abused in recent years. Babs, you and Ben and our gerrymandered representative Delaney need to start supporting your constituents.

Rep. Buck McKeon and Sen. Kelly Ayotte should start with Congress. If they can't/won't do their jobs, get rid of them. That's how it's done at Wal-Mart.

  • Budget, what Budget?
    FEDMAN
Am I missing something, how can you make cuts without a budget, and since we have not had one for over fours years, isn't that a problem? Sure cuts are needed, but focusing on Federal Staff is slim pickings as there are much bigger fish to fry. I just don't understand why our politicians cannot close tax loop holes, increase certain tax rates, or just implement a Value Added Tax, heck legalize pot and tax the heck out of that like you do booze. Entitlements have to be changed, WHY cannot all the parties comprimise. It is so scarey of the military being put in a position of comprimising National Security, DHS being cut so bad that our borders will be compromised, and other critical government agencies being cut to the bone, when the problem really gets back to entitlements and taxes. The two areas that politicians do not want to touch for fear of not being re-elected.... TERM LIMITS need to be imposed too.
