Is it a furlough one day a week or is it one day a pay period? The article references both! If it is one day a week, thats 39 days furloughed if we start in April.

  • pay periods vs weeks

I read thru that article twice and I didn't see mentions of pay periods, weeks were mentioned twice. Also, if it is one day a week April thru Sept, that comes to 6 months, or 1/2 year, or 26 weeks. Not 39,(they would have to go thru Dec), but either way, still a big time hit to the average rank and file worker. Maybe they should furlough managers 2 days a week.

    Big Joe
Who says it would stop in September? Have we ever (in the last 10 years) had a budget on October 1st?

It does not amuse me, in the traditional sense, that, people claim foul when the effort they had been doing, perhaps for years, is deemed "elective". The harsher the reality the louder the claim of unfairness. Comparisons are needed. for example: hand tools were once used to build cars, thus requiring more labor. Technology changed which reduced the need for labor, but wait, what of the economy in my local community, what about my child's education, my vacation to Aspen, what about the poor people who won't receive anything from me....... Should we stay the course and make cars with hand tools? If life's passage requires a new route, study up and get on that new path to your destination. And, PLEASE, stop the incessant complaining that life is unfair.

We are not writing about hand tools vs.machines. We are writing about getting the work done. Furloughs will hurt tax collections at the IRS. IRS is understaffed as it is. With less time to do the work, less money is collected. Thus, the deficit goes up. And what about the EPA? Will we let the air get dirtier. Thus health care expenses go up. That can be recited with many agencies. No budgetweenie, it is not about hand tools. It is about performiong the government functions.

Moderate, perhaps we are more in agreement than you suggest. The difference might be where the allocations of effort are made. Valid is your point that we need to get things done. Agreed. But, do not gloss over the possible truth that, efficiency may be enhanced if fewer hands are involved. Also, I am inclined to believe that at least 10% of government effort is redundant, superficial or wasteful. But, in other areas, the effort is resourced at 60% of what is truly needed to be worthwhile and effective. the relationship to what I stated, is that, we can do a better job of spending tax dollars and though it might mean some have to change what they do it should not be avoided just because "we've always done it this way" and some people have to "retool". But I do disagree with you, in interpreting your comment, that it is about discontinuing those things that have diminished relevance to the task of getting things done, (the "Right" things) and determining honestly how we squandered the resources that prevents us from having it all.

You made some good points. it would be more efficient to eliminate duplication. I cannot claim to know how much that is. My instinct is that X taxman is correct about the IRS having too many non productive functions also. Some of these people should be trained to do audits and collection activities instead of nonsense.-----You are right. We probably agree more than disagree.

  • Cutbacks have already started

Like many others, I am not waiting for the 20 percent pay cut to trim my budget. Local businesses are seeing much less of my and my pocketbook, and I mean the LOCAL businesses, the self-employed and mom & pop shops I try to frequent most. I also reduced my CFC contributions by about 75 percent this year in anticipation of the cut so I could keep up my church contributions, but those are not looking good either. Vacation? Ha, as if!

  • The question should be..."Would cuts in defense spending slow recovery?
    Rob
The answer to that question is yes as evidenced by the news that the economy contracted last quarter.

No Rob. Defense must be cut. We cannot afford all of the bases throughout the world. We cannot afford the latest and the greatest weapons. Defense must be cut.
