USPS last week started lobbying for a large dollar Govt bailout funded by us taxpayers.I think they want about a billion to start to avoid bankruptcy. And here we go with modest pay raises and 7% COLAs.This nonsense has to stop.USPS workers pay only a fraction for FEHBP premiums vs other FEDS.The USPS broke away from the remaider of Govt years ago claiming it could be profitable/self sufficient.Guess the USPS execs were asleep and ignored Email,FEDEX,UPS competition.I say no bailout,go to mail deliveries 3 days a week and let the USPS fade to oblivion.Sounds harsh but I'm just tired of bailing out inefficient entities and yes,we shouldn't have bailed out the banks and Wall Street either.

  • Try being accurate.
    The Original Joe S
They didn't "break away". The congress (you know - that bastion of integrity) split them off to force them to be "profitable". You are jealous. Typical jealous type. If you think they have such a good deal, go work for them. We need a postal service. They do a rather good job, all things considered. We have to subsidize it to maintain it. We subsidize all sorts of other stuff, why not the USPS? I'm not a USPS guy.....

    Bud
Joe,I'm not jealous. The USPS failed miserably to plan for the impacts of Email,Fedex, and UPS.Today's USPS is primarily a junk mail deliverer. Most people use email and the Web to do their financial transactions. Here's a hint Joe,years ago you received Govt checks by mail, now we have have EFT direct deposit.A vast number of other financial transactions today are by EFT.The USPS is a function most citizens need no longer. It needs to cutback in size, number of facilities, number of employees, and delivery days.I now throw over 90% of my mail away as junk, unopened.

Bud, I'm in total agreement. In the past month the only thing I received in the mail worthy to keep was the statement from my church, which they could have given to me on Sunday. All my bills come e-mail and I pay on line, pay is direct deposit and I magazines on a Nook, so really what good is the USPS.

First, one of the problems is that first class mail subsidizes other forms of mail such as charities, possibly books and periodicals, and other items. These other items are probably loss items. Yet this is done for social reasons. Private industry would not do this. Government should subsidize these items.---Second, the postal service services non profitable areas which the profit making companies would not do. This is also a loss area which should be subsidized by the government. I am sure there are other loss areas for the postal service which should be subsidized.----I get a large amount of junk mail, but not nearly 90%. We need mail delivery at the current rate for businewses and for non businesses.

Dump it all on the US taxpayer. Nobody seems to care. Nobody cuts costs. I love the USPS but we're all giving and empathy seems lacking these days.

How much money does our Military make each year? How much money does the Dept. of Agriculture make each year? How much money does the Dept. of Transportation make each year? Why is the post office the one and the only federal agency required under the US Constitution, (you can find establish post offices listed under Powers of Congress in the Constiution) and yet it is the only agency expected to make money? Congress sets the stamp prices, thus it is Congress that is responsible for the losses. In Canada a stamp is 65 cents and it is well over 70 cents in every European country. What can you buy for 45 cents today??? Our postage rates are the USA postage rates are the Lowest on this entire planet, and yet that is still not good enough for some p[eople..

If not for the revenue generated by junk mail, USPS would be even deeper in debt.
