  • FED Employee Cuts
    Bud
I'm retired CSRS.I have a great pension/health plan.If the Congress//Obama want to change the rules, fine;just do it for feds starting employment on a specific date.Don't penalize current feds. But,during my career,Reagan screwed us by implementing the Medicare 1.45% tax, eliminating the lump sum retirement option, and the infamous 2087 hour work year.Congress/Obama will stick it to the feds.During their second term, presidents despite party stick it to feds. Why,oh why did feds vote for him.

  • why?
    NCFed
Bud, why did so many of us vote for him? Because a Romney/Ryan white house, republican house, and the republican party platform would have 'stuck' us deeper, harder and wouldn't have waited for a second term.

  • Taxing 401k's et al and TSPs
    BeanerECMO
@Bud & NCFed; I guess you've the latest to be run up the flag pole - taxing 401k's and TSP accounts before anything has been withdrawn. Further, any sticking, as you call it, would not have affected anyone over 55 relative to SocSec and Medicare. But, the Mediscare tactic worked as it always seems to especially when AARP get involved with their misinformation to protect their insurance companies. What are federal, state, county or municipal workers complaining about any taxes. All of y'all are paid with taxes. All of the benefits are paid with taxes. All of the taxes are paid with taxes. I go back to my previous proposal. And, I know it will raise the hackles of every government employee who reads it. But it is a solution, not necessarily 'the' solution. We all know that DC has a spending problem. Nearly all the focus in DC is raising taxes. It confirms that government believes the money that anyone earns is the government's by default. Remember what happens when politicians say that a tax cut of any amount will "cost" the government? Firstly, zero out any rate of increase of a budget, then cut budgets as follows: All agencies at the fed, state and local levels should cut programs by 5% each year for the next 5 years except for those efforts that directly support combat ops, counter-illegal immigration ops, or DHS ops. However, each agency should still be held to a budget cut of 5% made up of cuts to programs that do not directly support those ops. All open federal, state and local positions not filled should be eliminated immediately. VA care (except for service connected maladies) as well as SocSec and Medicare / Medicaid should be means tested. Raise the retirement age for SocSec & Medicare / Medicaid to 68 for those who reach 50 by 01/01/2013; and raise it to 70 for those who reach 45 by 01/01/2013. Cut fed and state congressional operational funding by 10% per year for 5 years. Freeze fed, state and local congressional / admin / support staff pay for the next 10 years. Stop fed funding of think tanks; make them compete for programs. Cut corp taxes; cut cap gain taxes; do not fund Obamacare, and stop the additional taxes. Stop all subsidies; products should stand on their own merits. No business entity is too big to fail; no more bailouts. Get the government out of the business of trying to choose winners and losers in the private sector; e.g., Solyndra, Fisker, et al. Remember, 80% of the tax cuts in 2001 & 2003 were aimed at families, small bus owners earning less than $250K/yr. How many private sector jobs does it take to fund one fed job (even considering they pay taxes), and fed pay leads private industry by 1/3 to 1/2? They are paid with tax dollars; their retirement portion is paid from their pay (tax dollars); the government's matching funds are paid with tax dollars; their SocSec is paid with tax dollars; their Medicare is paid with tax dollars. That goes for state, county and municipal employees as well (e.g., teachers in the public schools/colleges). Cut some slack for fire and police; they do provide worthwhile service; just cut management and admin staffs by 75%. What does government provide as a product beyond security & defense? What effort does government do to produce 1 drop of oil revenue or 1 loaf of bread? Oh, they manage. Yes, much like MMS, USAID, DOEd, DOEn, DOC, NEA, NLRB, HHS, HUD, EPA, OPM, FDA (yes, I know they are blasted if they do release/recall and blasted if they don't) et al. DEFUND THEM ALL!!! States could save here as well by cut their equivalent departments / agencies. It's cheaper to have them on unemployment than be on the dole. Further, because of the dems and those weak-kneed RINOs; we are not just $14T+ in debt (beyond 100% GDP), we have over $61T (yes - T) in unfunded federal mandates (i.e., social programs that do nothing except keep a permanent socio-economic underclass in their place); plus whatever mandates states have done 'to' themselves.

Who suggested taxing 401k's and TSP's and where is this now? Source it, so I can read it.--- And why did you bring up the age 55 issue for medicare? What about the person who is or was 54 and worked 30 years for the government? That person got the shaft. That is why alterations should be for new employees.-----And yes, our salaries and benefits are paid with taxes. So what. We are still employees.-----And the spending problem is due to the Bush and the Republicans Depression, the effects of which still linger. We should cut the spending when the economy recovers. Then we should have a surplus to pay down the debt. We do not need another 1929-because like Hoover, we tightened everything.-----Who said that whatever anyone earns belongs to the government? You? Cite the source so I can read it.-----I notice that you create exceptions to the 5% cuts. I assume these are your favorite entities. So the IRS should have 5% cuts. The IRS collects taxes and enforces tax laws. Your suggestion will decrease revenue by more than the cuts. Perhaps you do not like the EPA. The cuts will allow us to breathe dirtier air. But since you are a money counter, that does not bother you. You want to freeze support staff. We are already short of support staff. Who is to do that work? And yes, it is real and necessary. Oh, let the professionals do it? professionals make much more than support staff. So professionals do that work and get less professional work done. That makes sense? (cont )

I will continue with social security and medicare. Medicaid is already means tested. First, I am not eligible for social security yet as I am CSRS. I will know in the future if I become eligible. I am not close to 40 quarters now. Why should they be means tested? You pay social security taxes into its pension plan. You have earned the right to collect its benefits. The same applies to medicare part A. I would be happy to give up part B as long as my FEHB plan would pay out what it is supposed to pay out without considering what medicare would pay out. However, Beaner, these entitlements were paid for buy us. They are not free.----- You say to cut corporate taxes, capital gains taxes, Sounds like you have alot of that stuff. You sound like a typical right winger spouting all of that stuff that already has been put out. Capital gains are fine. Corporate taxes need not be cut.-----Guess you have money to buy medical insurance or get it from your employer. What about those who do not have medical insurance? You would prefer to let them die or be crippled. Hopefully, Obamacare will stop that nonsense you spout. Hopefully it will reimburse medical providers what they need to treat the poor. Medicaid does not do so.-----You wrote that 80% of the tax cuts were for those making below $250000. This means that 20% were aimed at those making over $250000. And what percentage of the population was that, ?1%, 2%? Your comment makes no sense. (cont)

Where do you get the idea that Fed pay leads private sector pay? It sounds like you love the right wing cronies such as the Heritage Foundation and Cato. They have been spouting this garbage for a long time. Some jobs may or may not get more in the government, but my job definitely pays less. The same applies to lawyers, managers, etc. So stop your generalized nonsense.----You are clueless about management and administrative staff. Show us how your arrive at the 75% figure by computations and justify your computations.----The government provides many things beyond security and defense. How about road building? How about education? How about making sure the food you eat and the air you breathe is not poisonous? How about the job you have is safe instead of fire escape doors being locked or machines cutting off your limbs? How about making sure you work a reasonable number of hours per day and week? Guess you prefer the slave shops of the early 1900's. Guess I do not want the robber barons like you to rule.

  • Don't be Patronizing
    Dennis Retiree
Bud, Kenifer47, I have had it with patronizing Romney Voters like both of you. The American People made their choice in the last election. They selected President Obama for a second term. President Obama was not your choice, get over it. You should wish our President well as he confronts the problems of our nation in the next four years. Many Americans like me were fed up with the obnoxious, extemnist, patronizing Republican Party. The "problem" is not with the American People, but with your Republican Party.

Dennis, please don't patronize me.Don't need it.I voted Romney.Obama won.So be it.My point is those who voted Obama this time around should not be at all surprised when he does nothing for current working feds.He didn't do anything for them his first 4 years.I don't want to see any weeping, wailing, gnashing of teeth when feds who supported him get nothing from him for their vote.

The 1.45 Medicare tax shifted costs from federal health insurance to Medicare for older employees/retirees. That helped keep the insurance costa down. Changing from 2080 to 2087 hours -- what a horror! Admittedly, the lump sum retirement option was unfortunate. But, much of that benefit disappeared in high tax years.

Actually, it forces us to pay more for insurance without the same coverage. And yes, the 7 hour shift reduced our pay. And that is a horror. Reagan did lots of bad things to us. Bud only mentioned a few.

  • Sorry, no!
    ben
Putting feds on Medicare, removed the burden of federal healthcare insurers of certain expenses for elderly insured -- hospital costs mainly. That allowed insurers to keep rates lower than otherwise. Its a wash basically -- save on health insurance increases and pay Medicare for the services. At least, when you retire, you no longer pay for Medicare.

At least, when you retire, you will not have to pay for medicare? Did you forget the medicare premium? For my wife and I, when we turn 65, that is over $2000. per year. For what? I paid a higher premium when I was younger, so why does it change when I get older?

I agree with you regarding your comment about not sticking it to current Feds. I also agree with you regarding what Reagan did to Feds. The medicare tax added nothing to our benefits, but made us pay extra for nothing. I agree with the other items as well although I probably would not use the lump sum distribution because, based on my family history, I expect to live beyond my expected lifetime.-----Unless Obama actually does something negative to Feds, without Republican prodding, please do not make that accusation. I have heard enough of that from the bloggers here. Most of it never happened and the rest happened due to Republicans.

I think Mike is trying to send somebody a message. Perceptions are that the Dems want the cliff to slash military spending. And Repubs want the cliff to cut entitlements. Since Fed wages for those with strong educational qualifications are way below the private sector (read the CBO report carefully). If Congress cuts health care benefits and pensions, there won't be any reason for educated folks to work for the government, will there? Goodbye.
