  • America must keep its promises!
    Chuck@IRS
As bad as I feel about these changes, I think the major problem is the ability of the current Congress to devalue promises made by America. America is in poor fiscal shape and our remaining asset is the bond of America doing what it says it will do. If changes are needed in the contract between Congress and its employees, make the changes, and apply them to new employees. Those that can view the package offered and make a determination if that package is equiviliant to their service. Making changing in a contract that was written almost 30 years ago and has been the basis for thousands of employment decisions is wrong. If these changes are allowed to go forward what's next? Dropping Social Security? Eliminating Medicare? How about Congress just tells China, All those bonds you bought aren't worth anything. That would also solve the debt problem, not favorably and not in the long run, but it's the same as the process being put forward now.

Reneging on bonds, by treaties, have hard consequences. Any exports from the nation will be seized. No more imported oil for the US, nor any other imports. No one will buy future bond issues, so government will have to operate on cash basis only -- Ron Paul's dream. Besides, China has only one trillion. Japan another trillion. Most bonds are held in the US -- individual retirement accounts, group retirement accounts, life insurance companies and private investors, not counting the internal social security, medical and federal retirement bonds, including TSP.

  • No reneging
    Moderate
I think Chuck is writing not to renege. He is comparing it to the government reneging on promises to its employees. It has the power to do that to a degree, but it is not a good idea. That is the comparison.

As a current fed, they are "saving money" by eleminating admin assitants, and making everyone do thier own travel, timesheets, copying, etc..... Yes, there is 1 less salary to pay but the cost hasn't gone down, the amount of work is the same its just that we are paying GS-13.14.15's $50-70 an hour to do work that could be done for a lot less. Does anyone else see how we are being penny wise and dollar foolish? Yet management smiles and pats themselves on the back for "saving money" and being more "efficient". I'm paid the same no matter if I'm photo copying, doing my timesheet, or rocket science but the taxpayer woulc be getting more of their moneys worth if I could focus on rocket science and not all this other stuff.

  • True Savings
    ben
Federal employee costs are a small portion of the budget. Real saving can only come from reducing programs and entitlements.

  • Deficit Reductions
    Moderate
Typical radical right statement. Real budget reduction can also be done by increasing taxes on the wealthy as well as certain reductions to certain "entitlements. Also, reductions in the deficit can be achieved by getting out of the Bush and the Republicans Depression.
