Really? Federal workers are given a hard enough time about our laziness, and our high expectations of great benefits and pay (?-although not really true). If you want the day before Christmas off, use your leave.

  • Problem with using leave is that
    wisenekt
the staffing level is different. If the offices are expected to be open, not everyone that wants to take leave may be able to do so. If they make it a minimal staffing day, then that would help but still requires a certain amount of people to be there. Most people have already put in leave based on senority so those on the bottom lose out. Not trying to suggest one way or another what should happen but it is not as simple of an issue as putting in for leave.

  • who cares
    Rob
When looking at the big picture who really cares if we get the extra holiday. Seems like there are bigger things to worry about. This is sort of like the voter who goes to the polls broke, unemployed, and living on food stamps and decides to vote for Obama because he supports tax payer funded birth control.

Why is it every time there's a govt crisis my taxes go up? Oh yeah, that's how they sell it to the masses. I say Obama won on soaking the rich, and they should get what they voted for. But enough with the cliff, back to what really matters: Real Housewives of the Pentagon. Is it time to talk about snow days yet? How many will DC get this year? Another week?

I'm still wondering how raising taxes by $1.6T creates jobs. The Dems are so focused on going after the wallets of the evil rich as if they are somehow responsible for our government's spending habits. That's all I hear from these folks 24/7. "Pay your fair share. Pay your fair share. Pay your fair share." It's a freakin' broken record. I say give it to the clowns. Let the dopes raise taxes and see how many jobs get created. I'm tired of hearing the nonsense. If the Dems believe the recipe for economic recovery is to raise taxes then go for it. When that doesn't work they'll find some way to convince the dumbmasses that it's the GOP's fault.

  • "...raise taxes and see how many jobs get created"?
    FERS Fed
Probably comparable to the number of jobs being created now with current tax rates at historic lows. ..... Doesn't appear tax rates drive job creation. If it did, the country should be awash in jobs. ..... Consumer demand drives job creation. Taxes just get figured into the cost of goods/services sold.

The main contributor to a stagnant job market is the uncertainty in the tax policy and the overall impact of Obamacare. Do you ever listen when owners of small businesses are asked why they aren't hiring? They usually cite two reasons, uncertainty in what their taxes will be moving forward and the impact of Obamacare. I don't think anyone disputes the fact that small businesses create the vast majority of jobs in this country. The Dem party clearly believes that the impact a tax hike will have on small businesses is minimal. With that said I say give Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest of the Democrats their $1.6T tax hike and let the chips fall where they may. My only request is that the Dems, lead by Obama, except full responsibility when their tax plan does nothing to create jobs or spur economic growth. There's no way that will happen. They will blame the GOP no matter what.

Of course Rob. However, you forget that your friends, the Republicans, gave us the George Bush and the Republicans Depression. Now you want the same party to get rid of this depression by giving money to the wealthy. of course you forget about the reduced government spending which will put us back into a deeper economic crisis ala Herbert Hoover.

  • Time has told, you are not listening
    Budgetweenie
Rob, I ask that you imagine this. Taxes take money from some and redistributes to others. Businesses take money from some and redistributes to others as well. Let's see how each is different. Business charges for the product or service, let's say $100. Deduct the cost of production and you are left with a gross profit. Say $10. That $10 either gets placed into an investment or paid out for another consumer item. In some cases it is simply placed into a savings account that offers the best return and someone else makes decisions on the investment of that money. (Best yields appear to be off-shore accounts with zero taxes owed). Government, on the other hand, raises revenue through an assortment of taxes, obviously a sub amount from the $90 of business expenses (as well as income taxes from non-owners). These funds are legislatively determined for use in, (almost countless ways), government operations. What needs better understanding, and perhaps a negotiated agreement, is how much goes to each program. Certainly you would want a Defense Department, Education, and transportation. Perhaps a health department to go along with food and drug oversight department. We might even desire to have an oversight department to protect 47% from bad people. Almost forgot the DOJ that does its best to protect us from the other bad people. It takes a great deal of revenue to feed the "beast". Historically, those that had more contributed more (progressive tax rates) and everyone seemed to benefit. But, more recently, those that have the most don't want to part with much of what they "earned", though technically, inheriting isn't really earning. Sometimes. when an armed conflict is "unavoidable" you have to increase the revenue stream or give up some components of your other departments. (aka guns or butter). But, for ensuring your political party does not lose favor with the electorate, you can't/ (choose not to) make those decisions and borrow to meet the need. After a while you can't justify borrowing because it is getting too expensive. So, you decide to sacrifice those that are determined to be the least productive in society and your businesses choose to reduce employment or hours so as not to pay for those overly expensive "benefits". You know you can do this because you have knowledge that elsewhere you can find employees who will gladly work for $1/day and no benefits. Next you demand, as a business owner, that since you are paying too much in taxes (lowest since first established), you are not about to pay an equivalent "tax" by insuring your employees, (using an array of reasons). Your taxes are used to build airplanes that can reign destruction very effectively, but they each cost $500M. How many do you want? Add a few updated Navy ships at $2B each and tell us if that is enough. But remember, those people that build those planes and ships will queue up at the unemployment line if you don't purchase enough. Perhaps you like the planes and ships more than teachers, policemen, air traffic safety but you have to decide. The lesson of life that some have learned while others are learning and some will never learn, is that, there is plenty if fairly distributed, there is not enough if not.

You make a good point on the above statement by Budget Weenie. He does say something, but the format here is to eliminate paragraphs. I suggest that he put a number of dashes as the end of each paragraph to indicate a new paragraph. That way one avoids the one paragraph situation. Your thoughts?

Are you referring to the recession of about 1981-1982? How about 2001-2002? These were recessions which produced reduced taxes. There are other historic examples of this. Of course, FERS Fed responded as well.

Your party lost. So, you must make those kind of comments. Well, it would be like a poor or middle class person voting for Romney and blah because he (she) will get super tax breaks that he was really giving to the wealthy like himself.-----Really, Rob, birth control is a drug which should be employer supported like any other drug. And yes, abortion is a medical procedure and should be treated as such. You may not like these medical issues, but they are medical. It would be like me saying that there should not be any tax credits for any type of adoptions, but there are. There are economic and social reasons for adoptions as well as birth control.

Federal employees shoud NOT get the day before Christmas off. We have a serious ongoing budget crisis, and many politicians have submitted bills that would cut our pay one way or another. There is a great misconception by the general public that Federal workers are overpaid - up to 30% if you believe one certain former presidential candidate. Giving us a free day off would only add gas to the fire.
