A government contractor joined my foursome the other day. He commented that he told his congressman that he didn't see why federal workers should get a pay raise if they can't balance the budget. I asked if he was aware that federal workers don't create the budget, his congressman did. After 35 years, including voluntary service in Iraq, I'm still stunned by the level of ignorance about government and the verbal bashing of federal workers.

There are far too many dumb Americans. I have traveled to over 50 countries, and we have per capita the largest number of dumb uninformed citizens in the world. It really is sad. If you get away from the East and West Coasts, the level of dumbness increases ever more. Moreover, Americans think that they are the center of the universe which is even more ridiculous. Generally, the more dumb people in a state, the more Republican the state is when it votes.

  • Dumb People?
    Teachersson
Well, Rob, Dennis does have a point and what he needs to do is choose his words so that he doesn't focus people on the word "dumb" but what he wants to say instead. People around the world are listening in to Americans when they get on Facebook and Twitter and start taking about how government is to blame and how what we need is an extremely small government that can only collect taxes to fund the military. Foreigners have knowledge of how our system works - it isn't really that complicated - and yes it is Congress that is supposed to be doing a lot of things that they aren't. Our government is deadlocked because the Tea Party wanted to take over our government and they are still in the process of failing at that very task - and accusing people of being "communists" or "the molly maguires" is not working. Taxes still need to be levied and collected to pay for all the wars and world shaping and world policing that this country has gotten itself into (despite what the Tea Party says that taxes should be reduced). I have also been accused and abused at work because I am not a Tea Party, Fox News watching Republican (and I have the ridiculous attack memos to prove it). I took advanced American history and what people are saying in this country about having an extremely weak government that only collects taxes for the military is very far off base - and foreigners can see right through the Tea Party and Fox News. They have a right to laugh at Americans who have preposterous and unworkable ideas don't they? Yes they do.

Teachersson, I assume that you work for DOD? It is a shame that you do not work for the IRS or some other quality agency, where one's politics is irrelevant. For example, an agency where people are actually judged on the basis of their merits and the job that they actually do, imagine that.

I'll focus on the reader's letter to Mike. Classic case of person not knowing the difference between local, state and federal government functions. While much money is routed through Feds, I credit or blame the State for my local road conditions. Most people expect Feds to keep them safe, well I suppose that's debatable. As for luck, I guess I've been lucky but the problem is you get spoiled by a good streak and get greedy for more. It's no fun getting humbled but most people would agree humility is a good thing. Bottom line is what is the right amount of government and who should do it?

I work 40 hours per week. I have good health insurance. I have a 401K with generous matching. I will have a government pension in another few years. I get paid sick leave, paid annual leave and paid holidays. My salary is good as well - no where near what my private-sector counterparts make - but I am very satisfied with my pay. What does this make me? A big bad lazy government employee. Why should I have health insurance and vacation pay when those flipping burgers do not have such benefits? Why should I have a pension when most private-sector companies have done away with pensions so that their top executives can continue to earn ther seven, eight, and nine-figure compensation packages? Why should I even have a job when so many Americans cannot find work (unless they moved to China or India). Why should I have to work a mere 40 hours a week when most corporate professionals work days, nights, weekends and carry a beeper during vacations? Oh my, am I spoiled. Golly gee. Why should I have job security? IT'S NOT FAIR. Who needs government anyway? After all, Americans can take care of themselves....who needs rules and regulations. Lions, tigers and feds, oh my!

    Linda
It's like the old saying when you pass road construction, you would see three guys leaning on shovels and one working and someone would say "that must be a government job". But, really, the Federal Government pays for most the road work, the state governments ( and local) pay for some and organize it and contractors do the work! So contractors were leaning on the shovels, not government workers, they were too busy! Actually, I like the story of the dog eating the homework! I just want to know if Congress is using that story? It might work better for why things don't get done.

  • People Just Don't Know
    Dennis Retiree
Linda, the Federal Government does not pay for most of the road work. Most of the road work is paid for by states and local governments. You live in one of those western welfare states where the Federal Government gives you far more than your legitimate share of federal highway money. People in western states like to claim that they are rugged individualists, but they are dole states, LOL.

Dennis, On average, the Blue states (democrats) pay more into the system than they get out. The red states (republicans) take out more than they pay in. The exception is Texas, which is a payer state.

Are you naturally insulting, or do you have to work at it? Yes, many states receive more money from the federal government than they pay in. A couple of reasons for that. One is military installations, unless you are against self defense? And roads that anyone can drive on and do. Also, generally few people.

People are shocked to hear that I pay part of my health plain when I was working and are just as shocked to hear I still pay part now that I am retired. When I was working in jest I would ask if they thought I received a check every two week and just stayed home doing nothing.

  • Why we are the way we are
    JBsPoint2Ponder
I took an oath to defend the Constitution when I wore a uniform, but do not recall taking an oath when I began my federal career some 25 years ago. D.B. has an unrealistic and idealistic view of a very diverse federal work force. Like large businesses and large institutions, we have a wide range of highly motivated individuals through lazy bums. Two factors: First, the larger the organization, the less employees and managers are held accountable toward the success of the mission. Second, the civil service system has many traits of a bloated unionized shop. That is, an extreme focus on my benefits and not the mutual success of the organization. This entitlement mindset is increasing across our great country. How we vote in November will accelerate this decline or correct the course.
