What are we to make of this? A supposedly bipartisan report is issued by a Senate subcommittee under the control of the Senate Democratic majority which now is "backing away" from its own report's scathing conclusions, with Senator Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, denouncing the key finding in the report of lack of effectiveness in the DHS-run "fusion centers." Who's on first? Someone must be channeling Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. It's not surprising that law enforcement ranks are circling the wagons over this. Why? Because of the m-o-n-e-y at stake, as a close reading of the article makes very clear. The hypocritical smokescreen put up by DHS is blatantly obvious, and is no doubt crafted also with the upcoming election in mind. We wouldn't want to get off message here now would we now by any tarnishing of the adminstration's national security credentials. Yet again we have the illusion rather than the reality of a supposedly effective intelligence sharing process. Eleven years after 9/11 and we're still playing at all this.
