  • Rain on Your Parade
    Dennis Retiree
I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but there could be clouds on the retirement horizon. I call these clouds Romney-Ryan and a Republican Controlled Congress. Don't think for a minute that these folks would not cut the Federal Retirees COLAs. Some plans already floated by the "party of fairness and compassion" and others include not giving any Federal Retirees under age 62 a COLA. Here is another old idea from the CBO that they could resurrect. They will limit COLAs to the part of the pension equal to the maximum Social Security Benefit. For example if you were to receive a Federal Pension of $6500 a month, and the maximum Social Security Benefit was $3200, you would only get the COLA on the first $3200 of your pension. This provision is much more likely to impact CSRS Retirees rather than FERS Retirees. Here is what they could do to the FERS Folks, add up the FERS Pension and Social Security Benefit and only pay a COLA on the maximum Social Security Benefit. In a time of even moderate inflation, any of these provisions would greatly reduce the purchasing power of Federal Retirees. It is a real shame that we Federal Retirees can not feel safe and secure during our retirement years because of the hatred of the extreme right towards us. Here is my bottom line, don't assume that you get away from cuts because you retire.

  • Here's a News Flash......
    Rob
Both parties, Dem and Rep, are looking at ways to cut our benefits. The only difference is the GOP isn't trying to disguise it. You want a straight shooter or someone who tells you what you want to hear but then does something entirely different? Do you honestly think your Democratic friends are going to try and stop any cuts to our benefits? Please!! How many of your Democratic friends tried to stop Obama's 2-year, soon to be 3-year, pay freeze? How many actually criticized the freeze? The party is over pal. The country is $16 trillion in the hole and the federal employee is in the cross hairs of BOTH political parties. I don't like it, but it's reality. I tell you what. Lets forget about all the proposed legislation floating around Congress since most of that junk never becomes law anyway. Lets wait and see what legislation is passed through both chambers and signed by the president. Then we can examine the votes and determine who are friends really are. It could be an eye-opener.

I hate to inform you, but it is the right wing radical Republicans that are trying to stick it to us. I am not forgetting what your friends say, because that is their intent. I believe that if the Republicans gain control, federal employees will be stuck. Obama gave us the 2 year freeze after pressure from your friends in the right wing. The right wing house would not even include obama's proposal for a .5% raise in their continuing resolution.-----keep the blame where it belongs, with the right wing radical Republican Party. And stop with the newspeak.

  • Give Me A Break!
    Rob
I cannot believe you're claiming Obama's pay freeze was the result of pressure from the right. Come on Mod, the pay freeze came when your party had super majorities in both the House and Senate. Obama and the Dems could have given us a 10% raise and the GOP couldn't have done anything to prevent it. You mean to tell me that Obama, with super majorities in Congress, instituted a 2 year pay freeze because of GOP pressure? Please, that didn't stop Obama from ramming Obamacare down our throats.

Your comments come in 2 parts. yes, the Republican party and its lackeys, CATO and the heritage Foundation, did a great job of convincing the Americans to vote for the reactionary right in 2010. And politicians react to that nonsense. That is why we have the pay freezes of 2011 and 2012. Remember your friends are calling for a 5 year freeze with vouchers for the health plan, reduction in pension benefits, and even some want cuts in pay. And it is your friends in the House who did not pass a paltry .5% increase in our salary. Rob, please stop trying to revive newspeak. 1984 was 28 years ago. Since you do not like obamacare perhaps you should give up your health benefits and pay for them on your own. That is what you want for people who cannot afford decent health benefits.

  • Three year freeze = four years between raises
    bowmanrand
I think of this (pending) "three year pay freeze" as really being four years, since we will go from January 2010 to January 2014 between raises, all the while health insurance premiums have gone up each year and inflation, though low, has increased most all other expenses. And the payroll tax "holiday" will probably be ending (as it should), taking another 2% back from take home pay. It is depressing for this FERS guy, stuck just over three years from retirement age. Reading about CSRS types who got out just in time with everything intact doesn't help! But good for you...
