  • The Real Holiday
    Dennis Retiree
The real holiday for Federal Workers and Federal Retirees will be November 7, 2012 the day after the election if the right wing tea bagger extremist Team of Romney-Ryan are defeated. Their aim is to financially destroy the Federal Employees Compensation System. I am sure that Federal Employees will enjoy getting an extra day off in December.

  • Hmmm, that's a tough call
    Rob
Let me see here, do I vote for the guy who will financially destroy the federal employee compensation system or do I vote for the guy who will financially destroy the entire country? Now that's a tough call. I guess I'll flip a coin. BTW, since when did asking the federal government to live within its means become extreme? Seems to me having a $16T debt is extreme.

    contrarian
Most people are blind to the fiscal cliff or looking forward to falling off it. I can't explain it. I can't believe the things I hear. Plus it amazes me how the rhetoric doesn't match the reality. The amateurs don't even know when terrorists attack. I really don't get it. Are we that self absorbed that it's only about what goodies we get while the whole thing falls apart? Or are we in denial that it could fall apart? Almost surreal.

  • More than One Way to Skin a Cat
    Dennis Retiree
Rob, Contrarian, Jbs, have you ever heard of the term, there is more than one way to skin a cat? Of course, the next President and Congress (or perhaps the current President and lame duck Congress) need to come up with a deficit reduction plan to save the country. The question is what type of plan do you want. Do you want the Romney-Ryan Plan that gives tax cuts to the rich, and results in draconian cuts to the rest of us ? Or do you want a plan based on the parameters established by the Simpson - Bowes Deficit Reduction Commission ? Under Simpson-Bowes, we will have significant cuts and revenue increases. Entitlement Programs and other government programs will be cut in a fairer and responsible manner. There will not be tax cuts for the rich or anyone else, but responsible revenue increases that are fairer. Sacrifice will be more evenly spread and borne by federal workers and others in our country. I am totally amused that you consider the GOP, the party of fiscal restraint. You party has cut taxes that have greatly contributed to the current huge deficit. Your party has refused to close loopholes that are unfair i.e. hedge fund managers treating their wages as capital gains, this costs us more than 50 billion dollars a year. Your illegal war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan have cost us a couple of trillion dollars and have greatly contributed to the deficit too. Your party's tolerance of huge waste and fraud relating to military weapons program is legendary. You have caused more deficit spending than the Democrats ever did. If you are a patriotic American, there is one right choice in this election Obama-Biden. Unpatriotic Americans are going to vote for Romney-Ryan. You see a can play the patriotism card too, LOL. The American People are waking up to the GOP. The rich and wealthy interests sometimes rent the Democratic Party, but they always own the Republican Party lock, stock and barrel.

  • Unpatriotic?
    Rob
The only people who are unpatriotic are those who aren't going to vote at all. Calling Romney supporters or Obama supporters unpatriotic is about the most ignorant thing one could say. Obama supporters are definitely misguided and confused, but unpatriotic? I wouldn't go that far.

It is extreme when there are so many people who are unemployed. It is extreme when your friends, George Bush and Company could not do so in a time of relative prosperity. Instead, he gave the wealthy a substantial tax cut while the rest of us got relative crumbs. Let's get back to prosperity by stimulating the economy (which your friends in the Republican Party want to avoid) Let's also tax away the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy in order to cut the deficit.

    Moderate
You can vote for the one that will both help employees as best as possible and the one who will hopefully continue the recovery. We already suffer from the Bush and the Republicans Depression. We do not need a Romney and the Republicans sticking it to the middle class again so the wealthy can get more money.

    Cindi
Yes I am a working Fed, and believe it or not I actually work!!! As for the unemployed, my husband lost his job 2 years ago and has not found another one since, he's now one of those people not included in Obama's unemployment numbers which if they actually included those who gave up looking then the figure would be in the double digits. So I don't have to go far to ask the unemployed. :) Missed you too.

I am a working fed also. Why do you emphasize that you actually work. In my place that is the norm. As for your husband, I am sorry that he lost his job and is having difficulties getting another job. I hope he gets one soon. I also agree with you that real unemployment is probably double digit. However, I would guess that even real unemployment is coming down. Even so, you did see the Bush and the Republicans Depression. You just do not want to admit it.----Anyway, I will repeat a line. If it is your neighbor who is unemployed, it is a recession. if it is your wife or husband who is unemployed, it is a depression.

  • Consider the Cliff and not the Day Off
    JBsPoint2Ponder
Too many people have their heads stuck where "the sun does not shine" only considering their own "internal" needs. When will people see the peril of our country, not stuck in a ditch, but accelerating for a cliff? No, I do not need to be "given" the day before Christmas off. I can earn and manage my leave from a very generous civil service leave system.

Here we go again.I can't count the number of times this "do we get an extra day off for Christmas" issue has arisen. There will be countless lost hours of fed employee time spent discussing whether the answer is yes or no.If you're managing your annual leave properly, you'll already requested Dec 24 off.The country is 16 trillion in deby for pete's sake. This day off issue shouldn't even be a discussion topic. The answer is NO,YOU DON'T GET IT.Period and end of a one second discussion.

You have been around long enough to know that the reason they give us off is because of the cost to open up v cost to give us the day off. I do not know the actual costs involved. Can you enlighten us?-------------------------- To original Joe, If the office is closed don't they give you back your annual leave to use for another day? The only issue is whether you get caught with use or lose.

  • It only makes sense!
    MDBBALL02
I am making an educated guess here, but I would think that Christmas Eve will be given to Feds nationwide. To powerdown all Federal properties nationwide From Friday afternoon thru Tuesday night makes enormous fiscal sense, because it will save oodles of tax paying dollars. It also puts all Feds into stores, and restaurants...bolstering the economy! Because this event happens after Election Day, any President in any year would see that it is beneficial to close for the one day in between the weekend and the Holiday. It would be irresponsible not to. As for which candidate to vote for? There is only one choice. President Obama is doing an outstanding job, and Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan will only give MORE tax breaks to millionaires, send jobs overseas, and take healthcare away from millions (including college-aged kids), clogging up ERs with primary care needs, which costs everyone. He is also working on saving Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid, which pays for old age home care--Romney wants to get rid of these and make these folks pay their own way??? For a supposedly Chirstian party, I have been extremely disappointed with the Republicans, who are looking more and more selfish and self absorbed with each passing decade. Jesus Christ himself could never be a Republican. Think about that. No Republicans shouted from the mountain tops for the 8 years President Bush was in office racking up the War debt and not paying a thin dime to reduce it. How dare the Reps and Tea Party bash this President for what he has done to right the ship so far. Under President Bush we were hemmoraging jobs...Now, we have 30 straight months of job growth under President Obama in this economy is NOTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT. We are out of Afganistan, Iraq, Iran, found and killed Bin Laden and rid this world of terrorist leadership. Four More Years I say ... and watch the rest of the progress he will make!
