    When talking about energy savings don't forget to consider the winter heating energy required. A building with a dark roof can cost less to heat if you live in an area that has more heating degree days than cooling degree days. Some or all of the summer savings can be canceled out by increased heating bills. Another way to save energy costs is to add more insulation which will save money in winter and summer. As for installation cost, a new building here in town had a cool roof installed on some areas and a convential on other areas. The actual cost per square foot of the cool roof area was between 4-5 times more than the convential roofing. As for slowing down the flow of water off the roof, a roof at UNK (Kearney NE)has adjustable drain bowl strainers which are cheap and can do the same thing.     What is a Reflective Roof? Reflective roofs are designed to help reflect more sunlight from the roof’s surface, thus reducing the amount of heat absorbed by the structure. This reduced absorption results in a lower roof temperature than traditional roofs. Reflective roofs use solar-reflective “cool roof” coating containing specialized reflective pigments and colorants -- available in a number of colors beyond white. As described on the U.S. Department of Energy’s website (www.energy.gov), and supported by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), cool roofs using reflective materials to manage building temperature without increasing electricity demand can result in energy savings of 10-15%. How a Reflective Roof Surface Works A colored reflective roof works to keep residential or commercial structures cool in the same way as a white reflective roof. The key to this process is Solar Reflectance, or the coating's ability to reflect sunlight away as soon as it hits the structure. Instead of absorbing the sunlight and heat like a traditional roof, a cool roof reflects the light and heat away from a structure, keeping it cooler in the process. The high solar reflectance of reflective roofing materials regardless of color has been analyzed by various laboratories and industry testing groups and associations. This includes Oak Ridge National Labs, Lawrence Berkeley Nat. Labs, Cool Rating Council and others to be effective at keeping a residential or commercial structure cooler. Colored Reflective Roofs and Energy Efficiency Documented, scientific evidence confirms that a colored reflective coating can reflect the sun’s rays and significantly improve a structure’s total solar reflectivity. Based on theoretical data generated by various well-known national laboratories, reflective roofing provides a significant benefit to reducing the amount of absorbed heat at the roof surface. Although white is the most effective reflective color, significant reflectivity can be achieved with dark colors and mid-depth colors which are aesthetically more widely acceptable. Further, BASF’s laboratory studies have also demonstrated identical blue-grey formulations, common to the roofing industry, with both reflective and non-reflective colors, and found a 20 ͦ C difference in heat build. This difference is significant and is directly proportional to energy use and cost savings of HVAC. Studies performed by Lawrence Berkeley National Labs have determined that a one degree rise in air temperature raises energy demand by two percent, thus reducing the absorption of a roofing surface, regardless of the color, can be proven method to mitigate energy demand within a residential or commercial structure. BASF manufactures several pigment technologies that allow roofing surfaces to be coated in a variety of colors to reflect near- infrared radiation from the spectral energy of sunlight, as well as a near infrared transparent pigments which can be demonstrated to approach the reflective properties of white roofs when coated over a reflective surface while providing a brilliantly colored roof in nearly any color. For the above stated reasons, BASF urges you to consider including cool roofs utilizing colored reflective coating materials.
