  • I've been saying this for years....
    Time Bandit
I worked for the Navy as a contractor from 2000-2010, in 2005 I was transferred to work in DC near the WNY. I worked in the Team Sub group until I was laid off because the group I was working for at the time cut funding, in those 5 years, I saw so much redundancy. Now I am not going to take sides because I saw this on both sides of the coin with Feds and Contractors. There were also those who busted their backsides, like me, because we loved our jobs and what we did. Unfortunately we were the ones being stepped on when it came to promotions, those jobs were given to the children of management personnel after they graduated college with degrees. They didn't care if you had experience, in the contracting world a degrees = more funding and experience meant nothing. Similar issues on the Feds side, I tried getting a Fed job. The problem was you had to know someone high enough on the food chain to vouch for you, that honor was for family and friends of those on the mgmt level. Would I go back if I was asked...YES! Maybe those who I saw walking through the Isaac Hull gate to their so called boring jobs need to rethink their career. I heard so many Feds complain and whine how miserable their jobs were, calling the Navy Yard a pit, a hole, a cess pool, a dump. What I saw, PRIDE! For me, it was an honor to walk through those gates every day.

  • Heritage Foundation..Think Tank?
    NormalDude
I think not. Their so-called analysis is ridiculous. How could they possibly come to an accurate conclusion unless they simply chose those statistics(sources) that fit there agenda? No way. They pretty much made it up. For those of you who shake your fist in anger when groups like the Heritage foundation publish their "Findings", I encourage you to start thinking for yourselves. I am a registers republican, by the way.

One month is the "official" number. One of the most poignant memories of my youth was my dad, who was a Fed employee, taking three hour lunches with his buddies. Then there's the DC "weekend rush" about 2 - 3pm Thursday afternoon as all the DC bureaucrats start their weekend a day and a half day early. I used to listen to them tell jokes and make fun about all the other "poor saps" who had private sector jobs, then, inexplicably, complain about how they hated their own jobs. I have a feeling if you counted all the "soft leave" fed employees take, it would be more like three or four months a year.

    NormalDude
have any relevance to today's reality? Your right. It does get worse. People like you go on outdated generalizations.

  • HAHAHAHaha...

Ok, you're suggesting it's better since then? What's a more modern generalization? The numbers also tell us that Fed employees are paid, on average, about double the median wage. Now we learn they work at least one month less than everyone else. Are we also going to learn after all this that they're only half as competent? That would be a shocker. HAHAhaha... thanks for that.

your lazy dad's stories to indict those who work decades later under difference circumstances. You don't know squat. I'd be embarrassed to post my dad sucked as an employee.

When you can't defend your position, you resort to name-calling and character assassination. It is the mark of a petty, small person, and it only serves to diminish your credibility.

Either you are making this story up to sound cool and have dragged your father through the mud, or your dad is a lazy thief. What is the saying, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree"? Either way, you have no credibility, and have displayed no class.

  • hours and hours and hours and hours and hours ...
    DJ19
Many fed employees get 2 or 3 hours off on the Friday before a holiday. 3 x 13 holidays = 39 HOURS. Many fed employes get 3 hours per week "for health", to wall or exercise. 52 weeks x 3 = 156 HOURS "TEAM BUILDING"...half or full day junkets. 1 or 2 per year, easy ... 16 HOURS TRAINING.... weeks and weeks of paid training. Ofter "out of state"... (read that as paid vacation). AWARDS....(many follow GSA model of traveling somewhere to hand out 'awards'). Many get free 'flu shots' at work...and the time off at work to go get one. I think the study is low balling the numbers.

Heck, this is nothing new. When I was a kid, back in the 40s and 50s, there was a standard joke about those working for the state highway department. Why to the "workers" have shovels, brooms, and rakes? So they can have something to lean on while they are standing around. For a joke to be effective, it needs to have an element of truth. And in this case, it was the general, and accepted impression of those workers. You can argue, and deny all you want, but the highway department workers weren't the only target of such jokes. The registry of motor vehicles was also the target of similar jokes. You can add the unemployment office as a rich resource for comedians and comediennes. Why do you think cops are frequently associated with donut shops?
