You are right. As a smoker I agree with you. While your at it, mandate the removal of "ALL" coffey machines from every government building. You can not begin to calcalate the 'lost productivity time' employees waste tramping throught the halls in search of a additive drug. While you at it, don't forget the 'poggi bait' and soda machines. They all must go. It is hazzardsious to my health to have to endoer the ranchy coffey breath, while trying to squeezing into the elevator with some heffty associates. Enought is enough. When will there be some equality for the rest of us. Robert (Yes, still a smoker)

If this is still the law of the land. In the 1980s we were ordered to get all the coffee pots out of the offices. Apparently the Blind Federation of America (or what every they were called). Had a deal (with GSA) that only they could sell/provide coffee in federal Bldgs... Worked for me. I just walked across the street to get a shot of khula in mine at the bar. It was a kinder time back then.

Rob, your cigarette smoke is hazardous to my health. The coffee (I do not drink coffee or tea) is not. That is the difference.

According to my doctor at the Lahey Clinic, coffee is one of the most addictive 'drugs' known today; and is the root cause of a list of health issues. So are the candy & soda machines. BTW, I worked at an office where a female associate worked for nearly her nine months of pregnancy. Evidently, she had a 'reflux' problem. All day she carried around a Styrofoam cup. Every few minutes she would spit it. "That's right, spit. How about the germs she was spreading? I mentioned it to the manager, who in turn threatened to file "sexual harassment charges". Employees are allowed to come to work sick and are tolerated by management. 'No lost time'. Smokers do have rights. There are cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana users throughout the government service. Little is done to control it. Someday the liberal nonsmokers will get the 'upcoming".

The person should be forced to stop spitting. That is the problem. It is not the coffee. If she cannot drink coffee without spitting, then she should not be allowed to drink coffee. Your cigarettes harm other's health. We should not breathe your smoke. This has nothing to do with liberal or conservative. Please make sense when you write.

Smokers have had a target on their back for way to long. It isn't enough that smokers have removed themselves from the office, ensuring the air ducts don't contain any carcinogens from cigarettes at least, but now the great outdoors is being restricted too? Entire campuses? Serioulsy ... that is is excessive. The global atmosphere is plenty expansive enough to absord cigarette smoke. Next thing you will be outlawing city buses that pass you on the street, or Metro tunnels, because the exhaust is just too much for your frail little body to bear. What about the employee who stuffs their face with Subs at lunch time, or goes out for a 5 Guys burger and fries -- that takes longer to walk to, order, eat, and walk off (back to the office) than the authorized 30 minute lunch break? How unproductive are these employees? A 5 minute smoke break, even if it is 2-3 times a day at worst, has less impact on productivity if that is your gripe. Ever notice how slim the smokers are? Most smokers eat less too, so they aren't waddling around the office! Ever hear of a smoke and a coke? No not the RDA or surgeon general's diet, but smokers are a lot less of a drain on the office than they get credit for. And who's to say they aren't working? They can also conduct conversations that are business related out there! I was at the beach the other day and saw the "Smoke Free" beach sign. Funny how you can plunk down $500,000 for a beach place and be told when you are on vacation, outside, you can't relax with a smoke, and put the butt in an empty soda can? But a pig next to you can eat whatever they want? You aren't strong enough to stay off cigs after YOU gave them off walking past one? THAT is not anyone elses problem to deal with...slap a patch on your butt and stop complaining about the smoker's butt! Nothing worse than a reformed smoker ...

Again, the pig who eats too much does not affect my body. Your cigarettes do.

Mike, such a loaded question! My take: I’m a Fed. & a Vet. & believe in our individual freedoms with all my heart, including ones choice to slowly kill themselves with smoke (outside please), stress, junk-food, no-exercise, etc. At retirement age I’m no jock (never was), but learning after no exercise & a successful kidney transplant that the inevitable current of time is against us. The good news - we can be younger next year. 3.5 billion years of evolution from bacteria till’ now (the good old days) means we either eat & exercise right to build – or we decay and die - prematurely! Get over it, its fact and not a “belief system.” If we want to live into our 80’s plus, with a quality of life (vs. drooling in a retirement home) do the right thing for yourself, spouse, grand kids. And read a book, “Younger Next Year: A Guide to Living Like 50 Until You're 80 and Beyond” by Crowley & Lodge.* Just do it – you’re worth it! * Author is solely responsible. I worked at the IRS Ogden Service Center for years. I remember when they group smokers and non-smokers. Then had to re-arraign everyone because us non-smokers got downwind of the ventalation system. Once that was settled, we got an assistand manager who smoked, right behind and upwind of the the air flow. We got the asst. manager a smoke free ashtray. He loved it and when smoking was banned in the building he took it home and his wife loved it.................We had a 30 foot restriction on the smokers from the building. Since Odgen gets a little wet and cold in the winter, little bus stop shelters were put up outside each door. No smoking was allowed in the atiums at that time.....................I did have a friend who had a tough night, and declared a "cafeine" break rather than a "smoke" break, like the smokers took on top of their reguarlar breaks. The manager just laughed and let her do it. She was a good worker.................The only think I didn't like is when smokers use a government vehicle, don't smoke in the car, but do their last exhale in the car. Still fills it with smoke and it stinks. Had to have words with the guy. He took his own car after that so he could smoke in it.
