This same thing happened at the end of the Apollo program back in the 1970's.

Um, technical people lost the war about continued employment quite a while ago. As soon as engineers and database people make noise about how essential they are and that they want good pay, the payroll is just pulled out from under them. Welcome to "Anywhere, World." If you want money, you may have to keep on asking how you can get some money without illegal acts!

"Some local employers are finding that the former space workers' salary demands are sometimes too high. "STOP sending former Space Center employees," one employer wrote to Brevard Workforce, the local job agency, in a comment included in its monthly committee report. "They have an unrealistic salary expectation."" I used to work as a contractor for the Navy for 10 years, I was laid off after funding was cut back in 2010. Funding cuts are still going on today, best thing is I have job. I may not be making the salary like I was but what I make now pays the bills. You have to be flexible and start at the bottom, unfortunately some jobs may not hire you because you are too experienced.
