    Great Idea – I’m 64 and fully eligible to retire under FERS. But I’d like to “hang out” until full social security (SS) kicks in at 66. Do the math – ½ my retirement plus half my income (20 hours per week). It’s much sweeter to keep job continuity & mentor those coming along (remember I like what I’ve been doing), than to take full retirement and be short the anticipated income from Social Security for the next 2 years. Thus the term “phased.” To take a commercial job to fill that SS gap, you go to industry and learn new ways, e.g., writing competitive proposals on the weekends after putting in your 40 direct hours on a government contract – I’ve been there and it’s not fun. Just saying . . .

    Mike,I'm a retired CSRS.Read these columns daily.Have much empathy for today's working FEDS.It wasn't a picnic under Johnson,Carter,Reagan,Daddy Bush,Clinton,or Sonny Bush.Believe it or not,Nixon treated FEDS the best even before Watergate.All I can advise is hang tight,the pendulum will start swinging in the positive direction too but at an unspecified date.

    If you look at DHHS in Rockville you will see employees abusing the internet. doing shopping, facebook and IM other federal employees. They bring the own laptops in and while on the federal clock they are routinely doing this. Supervisor are aware and i even sent email to congressman. They get federal cell phones that are used as there home phone and teleworking they just loggin and go shopping, sleeping and other stuff. I think what should be done is what the do law firms. Make every hour accountable the software is available. The put job code and how many hours they spent and what they did research, type memos, made calls. When you working on the job code let say in word you login with job code, you can implement this on the phone you put job code in than the phone rings to person your calling. If there are meetings you put job code in on your computer and there usually a circular phone it case you have to make calls to people that are not in the building that need to hear the meeting. On this everyone logs into phone with job code and meeting. This will show accountability and the program tracks you day to day makes timesheets easier.

    Great point contrarian. If ts wants us to do all of this then he also wants 1-2 hours per day or 30-60 hours per month charged to admin time. Guess he would not want that. He wants that done on personal time. gr
