Well on the subject of a hot summer, I suggest we save a few hundred billion and pull off the fires in the West. BBC radio interviewed the Colorado Spgs Fire Chief this morning. What happened there, he has been concerned about for 30 years as a matter of WHEN, not if this would happen. http://www.firewise.org/ has all sorts of real good ideas how to firescape a home in the urban interface. Looking at the CNN (online) front page picture today, apparently no one ever followed the Chiefs or firewise suggestions. The Chief stated he has had his people cutting trees away from houses all week in an effort to not triage them DOA due to no protective space. The picture on the headline sums it up. Green trees 20 feet from the ashes of homes that were undefendable in the best of cases. Fire Depts can charge $500 per rollout. I suggest every home ordered evacuated cough up this $500. It might pay for just one federal aircraft retardant drop. The NIFC http://www.nifc.gov/fireInfo/fireInfo_main.html information sheet sums it up. The nation is only at preparedness level 4. Wait until it gets hot and smoking America.

that www.firewise.org is a good website. The landscaping guide applies to everyone, not just fire zones. I've never understood why people plant certain big 30-50'growing trees five feet from their house. Don't they know these things grow even if they're only 6 feet tall from Home Depot?

One of my neighbors let a 30 ft or taller tree grow in a back yard about 20-25 feet from the houses. Of course it drops berries in my yard in the spring and hurts clothes drying during the year.

  • Does Congress Know
    MAZ
Looking at OPM.gov one can see that GS employees under FERS receive 1% of their high 3 AVG income for each year they work. On the other hand Congress and their staff receive 1.7%. That is a 70% increase over Federal Employees. Do they know when they say they and Government Employees have a fat retirement program it’s only them? Do they know what they have has 70% higher lifetime income than ours? Can the Director of OPM ensure they all know they are treated better than all others? They and all their staff, have something others don't have, do they know they might be making public statements that are wrong? On the other hand is the posting at OPM.gov right?

  • In theory
    deployed decoy
As I remember back when congress gave themselves 1.7% X Hi3. It was because in theory they never worked for the full 30 years as a fed, thus had to wait until age 62 to start collecting the retirement they deserved (er earned). I guess that was back in the day before the professional politician. If we could just get term limits of 5 years, none of them could collect federal retirement. Unless of course they are prior military or worked in a cube at some point. This would really crimp the life style of senators though, getting fired with a year left on the job guaranteed (would need some type of golden parachute I guess). Wait did I just stumble on another idea. No fed ever allowed to work more than 4 years, 11 months and 28 days. None. Not the president, sure not the Supreme Court, not that CIA person under cover in Idaho, maybe 10% of active duty waived in the name of leadership.

  • Who Froze Fed Pay????
    dailycheese
Last week VP Biden was speaking to government employees. He was talking about how government employees were the middle class and how the Administration would continue to back federal employees. He apparently forgot that it was his administration that froze federal pay for the past two years, which, guess what, impacts everyones high three, either this year or 10 years from now. Yes the republicans have talked about cutting fed benefits and salaries, however it's the White House that has done it.

And the Republicans won the 2010 elections with their advocacies of doing much worse than what Obama was forced to do by the Republicans. You sound like a Republican wanting to totally distort the truth to suit your needs. I refer you back to the Reagan era when we fell from 9% behind the private sector to 30% behind. These Republicans will push us back even further.

If what I read in paper is true, it blows away the TSP which has gone down in the past 12 years.
