  • Contractor Pay Freeze
    Radar Tech
So, when will others "share the pain"? When will we hear the news of a contractor pay freeze? Crickets...

Contractors ARE private industry. Please note Fridays jobs report and the result to the markets. Even if not an elected person like contractors, they ALL lost Millions Friday alone. Besides VOTES all these people care about is POWER and you cannont have power without money. So figure the odds dude. Then even with a DOD Dircetive in place preventing this. I watched our lowest level commander just do away with one federal position in our shop. one other position was 'moved' to the higher HQ, another 18 months later not filled. But a total of FOUR contractors have moved into the office over the same 18 months... Apparently this Directive, like so many other federal and civil rights laws are not followed in war zones.

  • Federal Contractors are not *really* private industry
    paverfed
When I was a contractor for a decade plus I fooled myself into thinking that I was working in private industry. It is not. Private industry is ma and pa opening a 5 and dime, or a construction firm that builds houses, or my son's pediatrician, that's private industry. Those that sit in the federal contracting world living off the taxpayer doll occupy a gray area that can't rightfully claim to be "private industry" This is coming from someone who has worked on both sides of the fence for decades +.

An Army Specialist E4 with 5 years in the military earns more than a GS11 step 1 base overseas pay i the 'war zone'. That GS11 would pay federal and state income tax, FERS and health care to name a few deductions. The E4, $27 a month for $400k life insurance, SS tax and everything else tax deduction free. Her cut includes over $300 of COLA to shop at the PX and hardship and danger pay to have a private room with a full bath (w/tub) she shares with one other woman in Kuwait. She does need to go shoot her M16 once while she is here for a year. My numbers did not include a $38,000 reup tax free bonus. To be fair I also figured her gross based on back in TX. Still higher than a GS9 step 1 in RUS. Course I assumed a large portion of that TX salary at an assumed income tax rate of 25%, but the fact is, it is all tax free. So you see having that loveshack bathroom cleaned by a slave making $144 is very important to the worlds cheap oil supply. Now how about making retired vets working as GS14s pay some health insurance congress.

  • Why would the private need to share the pain with the Federal side?
    ITGEEK
It would be counter intuitive for any GOP to shoot themselves in the foot by making contractors feel the pain. The entire reason why those GOP are going out of their way to rob Paul to pay for Marry is because they need to keep their private government contracting companies PAID. The federal government is a cash cow for any private company...government wealth fare. If they could get away with it they would happily have 1 underpaid gov manage 10 contractors who will be milking the heck out of the system. Perhaps I too will vote/bribe/pay/lobby the GOP side if I was to ever start my own contracting company to Uncle Sam one day. I rather fill my own pocket with money then have it go towards some federal worker.

    jimmie55
Wow. The hits keep coming for the ones who support the military and keep things going when the military are deployed. Yet we have several contractors working side by side with us, with LESS RESPONSIBILITY AND MORE PAY THAN DOD CIVILIANS MAKE. My question is to congress: How does this make ANY sense, you morons???

If you believe politicians give a hoot about federal employees, then you're the moron. Politicians only care about those people who can line their pockets - and now with SuperPacs it'll become even more obvious. Look at how the defense budget has gone up over the past 11 years, it's ridiculous. It's more than doubled and yet political wonks complain about a small cut while they try to do away with Medicare. Seriously, when did Government by the People become Government by Big Business?

  • and more contractors
    deployed decoy
Well in my shop we are down 3 federal employees. One position was done away with after the guy was kicked out (not extended overseas) and moved back to TX. Another was forced out to retire under the 5-year rule. The team lead left for Iraq, he hated the local military team in Kuwait so much. None have been refilled. As noted one just gone from the TDA. One moved over to the higher HQ and one last I heard they just cannot get a Log Mgmt GS12 supervisor willing to accept any formal job offer that can pass the basic physical. But at least four contractors have replaced these people, a violation of law in regards to the one federal position that was deleted. But wait Kuwait is as lawless as it gets. Most of the contractors have been sucking at the Govt teet for far longer than the 5 years. And, Army has documented the garbage in the air exceeds all annual exposure limits for stuff like silica, that will kill a person. Good thing contracors will die alone in the dark and with no federal health care or life insurance.

  • Pay Freeze?
    Sleepless G
OK, go ahead and freeze our pay another year. Most of the people in my agency, (DOD) are sitting pretty anyway because of a Republican debacle called NSPS.

I and most every other special rate overseas employee took it in the shorts in NSPS. I exceeded stap 10 by 5% on the day we went back to GS. Problem is no special rate (10%) was paid. I lost, as in failed to be paid, about $16,500 while in NSPS. Then through fuzzy math congress would be amazed with (and Senator Akaka is now asking) I managed to go from stap 10 that I held 3 years prior to being drug into NSPS with no WGI bribe in to a step 9 going out. Did I mention I exceeded stap 10 by 5% or that I lost nine years of high grade/step held. I am after blood on this one. Everyone that had anything to do with this I am asking the Senator to fire for the good of the service.
