  • Heres some news for Congress...
    JohnE
from the seniors who subsist on the meager SS payments and the even more meager COLA increases...if you, Congress, vote to cut the annual percentage increases SS recipients recieve to cover the raise in inflation...then the next time your election comes around, you can kiss your big fat ugly butt goodbye as a member of Congress. For decades the Congress stool money from the SS Trust Fund and inexchange hands out almost worthless IOUs, for the sole purpose of covering up the hugh budget deficiets to fund two wars, tax breaks for the rich and payroll tax holidaysamong others, and now they want to cut benefits. I am telling you right now, if Congress does this, they can all plan on joining the unemployment line. Sure cut the 1.7 % increase to half that..you tell me how that works. You get less than a $50 dollar a month increase, thats $600 dollars a year to cover engery costs and food costs that are skyrocketing and then add on increaes to Medicare...Congress, you try living on that as many American do...d amn you all to h ell.

  • COLA
    FED_UP
SS was not created to be ones PRIMARY retirement income source. It is supposed to be the third leg of your retirement income stool. The other two legs are supposed to be your; savings, 401K, and other investments. Hearts and flowers for those who have not realized this until the day before retirement.

  • Thats absolutely true but thats not...
    JohnE
the way it has worked out. Many many seniors depend soley on their SS payments to survive on. In fact most of them. And now the situation is even worse with so many individuals forced into early retirement due to the unemployment situation and the foreclosure problems...many lost eveything they saved to try and save their homes. Many expected to work and were forced out of work and then could not get back into the market because of their age. Most Americans have savings of less than $25K....so its fine for those who avoided the clamities of the recent past but thats not true for most retirees..so you want 60M seniors living on the street or going hungery for no fault of their own...SS has mutated into the primary source of income whether you like it or not, thats a fact. When you chain the CPI you are in effect, taking the bread from their mouths...hearts and flowers dont put heat in a home, food in a cupboard or a roof over their heads..its immoral and unethical to hold the very poor hostage to the malficeance and criminal misconduct of Congress. Which I assume if fine with you...

  • Dependent on Social Security?
    Radar Tech
I figured out back in my 20's that Social Security was a Ponzi scheme. I'm 49 now and have been saving and investing for over 20 years. Sure, I took a hit from stocks, just like everyone else (except I was watching and pulled money out quick and only lost 5%). I bought my house (it's true, it is small and old) under market and still owe less than it is worth, despite the value "growing" and then "shrinking" recently. I drive a 9 year old car and my wife's used mini-van is 7 years old. We fix them rather than buy new. We shop a lot at discount and second hand stores. God willing, we will have enough for retirement without Social Security. The Boomer generation seems to have partied all the way to retirement years and now they want everyone else to be responsible for them. Have you ever heard the old Cricket and the Ant fable? You crickets want us ants to have less during the winter so that YOU can continue to fiddle and dance while we work. News flash - grow up and be responsible for your own finances. Don't blame the government for not planning a retirement for you. It's called being an adult. Try it. It has it's challenges, that is true, but it is very rewarding to your self esteem to earn your own way in life. Are you "retired" but cannot make it on Social Security alone? Well, apply for a job somewhere. Take up a hobby that pays you, like wood working, gardening, play the piano or guitar at a cafe for tips, collect bottles and cans. Don't sit there and complain - DO something productive. Babysit for a fee. Deliver newspapers. If you are truly disabled, fine, we'll help you. Other than that, if you aren't happy with SS money being enough, DO something about it besides whining to my generation that we need to pay more taxes to support you.

I thought Obama campaigned on saving seniors. Now he wants to cut their 'pay'.

  • Does anyone know what they are doing.
    PAULE
This new formula will only be as good as it keeps COLA's low. When it starts to work the way they did not want like the current one we will hear stories from the law makers. All of our cost of living only went up 1.7% right???
