In this instance it is not protocol to dump fuel. The plane was leaking fuel.

Glad to see Mike's back and doing his specialty: providing balance and perspective. He sees opposite sides like no one else. It's part of what's missing in DC today. Having lived underneath the "sound of Freedom" near the VB Oceanfront I know those jets are part of life. Thank whatever lucky stars no one got seriously hurt because anything can happen. Maybe those GSA folks can request alternative discipline to go down to VB and help clean up the damage site?

Great idea for them all to root around in the burnt toxic damage and waste, except. They would get 25% hazard pay added to every duty hour, around 8 hours of full time and half (emergency) OT making anything more than straight 8 pay at 1.75 rate, and full MI&E included with the punishment. All the while resting in all expense paid beach front hotels a few hours a day... Heck even the most recent GSA guy punished is sitting at home on full federal salary on Admin Leave, instead of LWOP. I remember when the Shuttle went down over Texas. NASA was just amazed that 100s of fire fighters and the like were on the ground shoulder to shoulder in swamps full of snakes 36 hours later, picking up stuff. No one told them the folks were banking 120+ hours of pay a week with the OT and hazard pay. No I don’t think GSA deserves a Christmas bonus early this year, send the fire fighters again, who are mostly GS5s and 6s, still in the off season for the most part.

  • Gov't Efficiency
    Gary R.
It has seemed obvious, for several decades now, that one of the worst flaws of the Federal Government has been its failure to emphatically inform the public of all that it does for us. Aside from a pie chart on the back of the 1040 Instruction booklet, the only horn blowing has come from Mike Causey's column. Meanwhile the detractors lambast Feds and their service loudly and continuously. We need an amplifier providing a counterpoint to their propaganda machine.

@Gary R, it isn't that government agencies don't try to inform the public - check any agency's website and see how many press releases they produce in a week. But the media only sees themselves as watchdogs and whistle blowers and won't give them the time of day for their good news.

  • People don't see
    Linda
If the IRS shut down during filing season and people didn't get their refund checks, or Social Security and people didn't get their checks, the public would notice, and heaven forbid, they don't get their mail. Other than that, many people never go to or contact or hear from other government agencies. How often do you, as an average citizen, actually hear from the FBI, CIA, Boarder Patrol? You don't, and if they are doing their job, they aren't noticed because they are preventing problems. Let alone talking about the EPA, SBA or Mining Engineers. I like being not noticed. Could we go back to that?

I buy Meat that was inspected by the USDA. I take pills and other medicines that were approved by the FDA. I drink Milk that meets USDA regulations for homogenization and pasturization. I ride on Roads and Bridges that meet national standards and were funded by the FHWA. I travel via airplane and take off and loand safetly thanks to FAA and TSA! The stuff I buy traves via Train monitored by the FRA or truck overseen by the FMCSA. I drink Water that meets EPA standards. Mike is right .. the media generally only focuses on the abuses SOME agencies stupidly serve up! They should be doing other stories. An agency can't evenhave an anniverary and get them to focus on the accomplishments without them dragging some negative angle in....As for GSA: My agency would NEVER allow 300 people to go to Las Vegas for anything! We can't even SAY Las Vegas! There is a perception thing that my agency lives by: What would 20/20 do if they heard (saw, found out, etc) this ..... if it doesn't pass the 20/20 test, we don't do it! PERIOD!

Just look at the Public Affaris shops in the Government .. They are headed by politicos (Schedule Cs) whose main interest and job is to get the politicaly appointed leader in front of the camera bragging about the Administration. They aren't smart enough (either party) or don't CARE about pushing the program and letting the political leader ride the agency's coattails! The program and the career folks never get any media coverage ... Everyone is soooooooo afraid they will be investigated for "lobbying" if they promote what the agencies do. And the other side of the coin is that no one in the media (except Mike of course) wants to cover the government DOING GOOD ... Ever since Watergate it's "Gotcha Reporting only" wrapped in the cloak of "Investigative journalism." They all wannabe Woodward and Bernstein ... and they will expose any and every rotten thing they can find to try to go down in the history books with them. They will never achieve that "stardom" but the media has put a huge target on te Federal Government -- and not only does GOTCHA sell....it qualifies the reporters for Pulizers! The unions don't even put PSAs (ublic service announcements) on TV to educate the taxpayer and Congreee what the Government employees do--you'd think the 3 or 4 unions could pool resources and do that!!!!!!
