When Congress, both houses and sides of the isles, cut their staffs, and pay, then and only then should they talk about more cutting of the general federal workforce!

Besides cutting salaries and work force in congress. The fools can violate the FAR and tell every contract with an option year increase, the increase is out, sue us. Wait contractors are protected by federal laws.

Well I just efiled my federal taxes. After the 1040A short form standard deduction (I own my retirement cabin (not the bank), property taxes on it under $100 and even though medical costs were over $5000 I could not deduct a cent of that), four personal exemptions and one child tax credit. My effective tax rate after, $22,000 tax deferred TSP, tax exempt federal health insurance (not part of the $5000 in health care out of pocket costs), tax free overseas involuntary separation allowance and COLA was 5.85%. Reduce that to 3.15% on my gross, much of which is not taxed. Subtract 2% for social security I am not paying this year and my federal tax rate was 1%. I am a GS12 step 9, gross last year was over $113,000, I paid taxes on $36,000. Course the software I used showed me national averages on more than I could have dreamed. For example the average cost to have a persons taxes done was around $8,000. Now I know everyone is different and some actually cheat on their taxes. But why would I even bother at a 1% tax rate and $39 in software that includes the efile costs. What scares me is the people that pay $16,000 (tax preparation fees for one presidential candidate with $100M in the kids trust funds and me averaged).

  • OVER re-acting
    Rob
Congress is merely reacting to all the negative press re: federal pay and compensation. This is no different than last year when we heard about the insider trading members of congress got away with for years. Once the press jumps on something that angers Americans congress reacts. Right now the federal employee is being beaten down by the press and congress is responding with bad legislation. We need legislators to go after the real cause of our soaring deficit, ENTITLEMENTS.

You cannot be serious. The House has a Republican majority. The House is introducing all of this garbage. It is being introduced and passed by Republicans. Senate Republicans also introduced this garbage, but it is going nowhere because of the Democrats. Come on Rob. Place the blame where it belongs, on your radical right Republican friends.----As far as entitlements are concerned we are entitled to them. We paid in and worked for our salaries and benefits including pensions. You and your employer paid into social security. That is your entitlement. So, is that what you want reduced or eliminated. I don't.----Let the wealthy pay more as they got the most under Bush

"We need legislators to go after the real cause of our soaring deficit, ENTITLEMENTS." Someone pinch me if i'm dreaming but didn't the GOP wanted to save DoD's funding by robbing from the Civilian's pay and benefits? DoD spends 100s of billions over a decade on weapon systems that tend go be over budget and costly to us all and you're talking about Entitlements? To save billion dollar programs like this they want to take money away from Civilians even further? Sounds more of the typical GOP's mentality by robbing the poor for the rich to get richer.

  • Where does my salary come from?
    Hector
The vast majority of federal employees are liberals that will support Obama at any cost. These, for the most part, are the same freeloaders that believe in global warming and think electricity for the Chevy Volt comes from a wall socket at that is it. The mantra of feel good liberalism is showing its true colors in this federal pay debate. When is the last time you've heard a fed say he/she was grateful for a job and is willing to take cuts, that in the aggregate, are far less than most non-fed folks are taking now? Most freeloader federal employees, just like Obama, are unqualified for their positions and did not get them based on merit.

  • Hey Hector
    obscurechemist
Listen up and listen good: I got and kept my job as a Fed based on merit and nothing else. I worked for low pay and under spartan conditions researching cancer for your benefit; and I was productive, co-authoring eighty scientific publications which are the intellectual raw material, entirely free of charge, for your precious private sector. I have always felt lucky to have a job that was the envy of thousands of other scientists or any other workers around the world. I have always been in favor of paying higher taxes, even at my pay level, if it would make for a more equitable society. In other words, you don't know what you are talking about.

Hector, the next time some terrorist blows up some building and you lost some family member then please remember not to blame any Federal agencies for not doing their jobs. It's ok to cut their wages and benefits but it's not ok for them to screw up when something bad happens. It's ok for Teabaggers to cry about how big the government is but they're one of the first to probably cry about how bad the government is if something goes wrong.

    Damascus Transplant
I for one am grateful for my job and appreciate the salary and benefits that are part of my compensation. Could I get a job in the private sector and make more money? Sure, if I moved to California, Arizona or Florida, which is something I don't want to do. Ultimately Congress is to blame for this mess, they are the ones who always have to "bring home the bacon" to bring a pet project to their district/state and heaven for bid if it gets cut. No one wants to take a realistic approach to reforming government and until they do, we feds are going to continue to take it on the chin.
