  • USAF drone operator exhaustion
The problem is to a large extent of the Air Force's own making. They insist that only commissioned officer pilots can so function, even though drone operators are, ipso facto, not personally themselves in flight as they control the drone aircraft. However, the Army has long made successful use of trained enlisted personnel in its own drone program, not to speak of the long record of using warrant officers as helicopter pilots. The Air Force has argued that the nature of their drone program is far more complicated and that only trained USAF pilots can deal with this heightened complexity. This is certainly debatable and appears more intended to maintain its rigid policy on restricting its own flight pilot operations of any kind to offcers. At teh very least, this policy needs to be reassessed.
