With an increase in 24% for retirments last year and we are not done yet, what will occur next year? People talk about this not happening in the private sector, but it is. Not people retiring, but those who lost their jobs and qualify for minimum Social Security are appllying rather than waiting for the income. Then trying to get a lesser part time job to make ends meet...........We have to realize that the general population is aging and retirements are going to escalate regardless, but with no pay increase and or no job, people are going earlier. And since people are living longer, there could that many more people run out of money and go on Welfare as they age. A scary thought.

With all of the retirements, Congress still wants the work done. That means more and more cases must be done by fewer auditors and agents. Can you imagine what the quality of the cases will be as they reduce the goal for time on each case? But make sure you do all of the paperwork.

  • Subsidy

Mike They've already scaled back the transit subsidy to $120. Effective with the last payout. I'm disappointed, but I'm grateful regardless, because transit cost in the San Francisco Bay Area is ridiculous. I do miss my pay increases, though.

  • Its not the FED its the contractor!!!!
    Working_Fed
The latest budget under both house and senate: •Caps taxpayer-funded salaries for defense contractors at $400,000. The cap is extended to all contractor employees (not just the top five most highly paid executives in each company). The provision offers an exemption for scientists and engineers. CAP THE Contractor SALARIES TO 200000! This is where the government expenses have grown since the 1990's. Scientists and engineers should not be exempt. See POGO if you really believe that these people are really worth more than $400,000. We need more indians at both the fed and contractor level, not more chiefs at these ridiculous prices. The indians at both fed and contractor levels are worth the 100000 level but not at the 200000+ level.

I can't verify your numbers as I don't know, but I agree that we need more indians and less Chiefs. I think that is why Congress is not listening to OPM (I think) that has a study out on what Agencies to Combine and who are replicating each other. It is the Chiefs that would get cut, I am sure the work would remain, less a few. But, always lots of work to do.

Careful about cutting the scientists' pay. You want top quality ones with imagination to truly advance the weaponry etc. They cost money. I do not know the numbers. I also do not know enough about engineers to make a comment.

  • Scientists make $400,000?
    contrarian
That's a heck of a govt job. Can't help but feel like it's a fleecing of America.

First, what is a top quality scientist worth, say a present Albert Einstein? I doubt that every scientist is worth $400000, but would the top ones be worth that much? You tell me.
