Why limit your complaints to Congress? We just discovered that Obama has 454 White House aides, who collectively earned $31 million last year. Here's the link. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2011/07/obama-white-house-salaries-soar.html And what about the 33 czars that are paid by us?

  • It's not the payroll
    contrarian
While some jobs may be overpaid, it's not the payroll that's bankrupting the country. That's the red herring. Two different world views in DC are causing this crisis. Which could easily be solved. 223 years ago a constitutional convention was held and a remarkable document was born that is the model for governance. The folks today aren't qualified to carry their quills.

I must disagree with the latter part of your comments. The people who wrote the Constitution lived in different times. We were a farming nation of 13 states with slavery. Women did not have the right to vote. Science and technology were extremely limited. Industry was small. Now we are an industrial nation of 50 states. Women have the right to vote. There is no slavery. We can travel across the country faster than one could travel across one medium size state 223 years ago. We have a much larger armed forces. We have some protections against monopolies, the magic elixirs of the early 20th century, dirty air and water and other items that our forefathers did not even dream of. We have passed a number of amendments to the Constitution. The interpretations of the Constitution have changed due to changing times. You may not agree with that, but they are needed. You cannot be ruled by a static document in changing times.--------As far as brainpower, whether I agree or disagree with the high up people, I believe they could easily as smart as our forefathers.

First tea partier, people are speaking of cutting trillions of dollars. You are writing about $31 million of total pay for one year. Do you have any idea of what these people do? Do you have any idea of what is necessary or not necessary? If so, please tell us. Be specific.----------My second question is whether you raised this question when a Republican was in power or do you limit this type of question to the politicians you do not like? And why are you citing the Los Angeles Times as an official report? (I went to your link)---------- You left out the statement that this is only 7 more than what George Bush had. That is not meant to be a criticism of George Bush as I have no clue as to what is needed and what these people do.----- Instead of suing the radical right wing term czars how about stating who these people are and their job function. I doubt that their official title is czar even though the warped radical right loves to use that label incorrectly.

You make the White House staffing sound like a major expense and a enormous over expendature. Like Moderate I can't tell what these folks do or if they are really needed, I will say that $31 million for 454 people is only about $68,300 each. That is not a tremendous salary in this city. In fact, if that was a one income family, they would be well below the Fairfax County median income of $102,000 as of 2009.

What I took from contrarian's comment that today's legislators "aren't qualified to carry their quills" has little to do with intelligence and everything to do with character. Our forefathers created an eduring and flexible document that is still the envy of most of the world. Their focus was on doing what was right for the nation, and creating a model society where everyone had the opportunity to prosper, as compared to the louses that currently occupy the dome and are only interested in getting re-elected so they can continue to line their pockets with graft disguised as campaign contributions. The solutions, while not easy, are not beyond the grasp of intelligent and honorable individuals. Sadly, that combination is sorely lacking in DC today. The current crop (on both sides) much prefers theatrics and hysteria to productive disucssion as uncertainty creates an environement where they aren't held accountable by the voters and they can continue to suckle from the teat of graft ond corruption to their significant profit.

I did not get that from Contrarian's statements, but I did get that from your statements. They did create an excellent document. I guess my feelings about certain issues such as womens' right to vote and slavery should be put into the beliefs of the times.------------Also, I agree with you that what politicians statements should be taken with a pound of salt (whether right wing, moderate, or left wing)

Getting along has nothing to do with intelligent. Jails are full of evil geniuses. Read Mod's reply to my post and you'd think the Founding Fathers had it easy.

  • Federal Work Force Reduction
    showmestate1
I worked for a Federal Agency for 35 years. Each time an Administration or Congress wanted to make a political points they took away workers pay, raised workers health insurance, froze promotions, and reduced the work force. One thing they never did and that was reduce the work, the smaller work force was expected to perform. Generally it increased double the reduction in personnel. Think of fewer FAA flight controllers, fewer food inspectors. The number of flights won't decrease, and the amount of food will not decrease. However, the safety of our citizens will decrease.
