Need a gold star to show the contractors that either: spend 270 days a year outside the USA and never pay US federal tax on the first $87k of income from any source, are employed in Kuwait (as well as many other countries) where their parent company dictate they have foreign bank accounts for monthly payments that will never be known by the IRS and any company due to whatever reason pays no corporate income tax to the USA. I remember working in Kosovo on 9/12/01 and one KBR guy gripping his sneaking into the USA through Canada for 90+ days a year (staying tax free as a result) were a thing of the past. Sure had his priorities wrong, definitely not in it for love of country. As for the military (DoD) taking cuts. First you have to remember where the term Beef Eater originated in England. During times of poverty and famine, the military in England ate beef, while the peasants ate rat. Thus the military kept the guns and cannons pointed AWAY from the King aiming at naturally the uprising peasants armed with rancid butter. My money is on no cuts to military pay and benefits, including federally subsidized child care, so Welfare to work folks continue to join up by the thousands, preventing the need to draft some congressmans kid to come to the fight. It is easy to buy protection this way you see while the congressman and his family head for undisclosed hardened facilities with steaks in the refer. Pay parity for the military has long since been achieved. A E5 over 6 years with all the tax free incentives now earns more than a GS11 step 1. I for one don’t really care that Sergeant has a 1 in 20 chance of actually getting shot at, so do Yellowstone Park Rangers or Smoke Jumpers saving that congressmans or CEOs trophy vacation home, they are GS6 to GS9.

The cold hard reality is that a piddling $35B cut in a $3.6 Trillion budget doesn't mean squat. This Senate & White House are proving they don't take the size of our debt seriously, even when the IMF is warning that our debt is unsustainable. At the current rate of spending, within 15 years, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid & interest on the debt will consume our entire annual Federal budget. There won't be any money left to pay Federal salaries or pensions. The U.S. is going bankrupt at the rate of $4 Billion per day. That is how much we are borrowing to keep the lights on. Instead of tilting at windmills & solar panels as our future, we need to begin drilling and mining our own resources. We have enough oil in this country buried in the ground to be completely self sustaining for 50 years. The lie that we only have 2% of the world's proven oil reserves is just that, a lie. We are constantly discovering new sources of oil in our country. We now know of a huge oil field between North Dakota & Montana that we didn't even know existed 5 years ago. Instead of sending that money to countries in the Middle East & South America that hate our guts, we could be spending it right here, creating jobs & generating tax revenues. But no, we'd rather use that money to prop up dictatorships overseas. This is insanity.

You do bring up some good points. Our economy is weaker and we should make various adjustments to taxes and expenditures.------------------------------------------ How many troops are in Europe and do we need them there? The cold war with the soviet Union is over. There are some issues, but does that require the number of troops there?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The number of troops in Asia is another story. South Korea is not a dictatorship. Neither is Tawain. They will be overrun if the US troops leave. Perhaps the governments there know this and should subsidize the US cost of troops there.------The mideast has a great deal of accessable oil. Yes, Saudi Arabia is a dictatorship, but it is much better to deal with them than countries like Iran. Can you imagine the difficulty in getting oil if the countries in the middle east are Iranian satellites? You want to get resources in the US. The reason for the restrictions is because of the pollution issues and preservation of various forms of wildlife. I guess the recent BP issue is a primary example. I still would like to know whether the well was properly done.-------------------------------------------------------------------------- Obama has suggested spending cuts of $3 trillion and tax increases for the wealthy. That sounds like a pretty good suggestion. And I notice you forgot to include the House because it is Republican. They want to aim their cuts at the poor and the middle class. They want to exclude defense in the cuts. Something is missing in your comments.

A few point for both Tea Partier and Moderate. One circa 2007 in Germany Army Europe kept an entire Combat Brigade hidden away from congress; no idea how over staffed Europe is now. But also know Africa Command is HQ in Stuttgart, about 3 miles from European Command HQ. The forward element for AFRICOM is in Vicenza Italy. But only about 35% as there is no housing for the rest of 172 BDE so they are living in newly constructed housing off post in Germany. Now I only ask why we even have a COCOM for Africa since the entire mission was and still is based in Germany. DOD is selling the best and newest strike aircraft to Saudi. Last I saw (on 60 Minutes), DOD had still to brief and receive permission from congress to make these sales. Saudi is NOT a dictatorship. It as well as every other ME country is a slave stare monarchy, that the UK and US (to some degree) put the King (god like status) in place around 50 years ago (I think we did this because they helped us win WWII by selling us oil for most of our GOLD). Kuwait and Saudi, both Tier-3 Trafficking in Persons countries as defined by the US State Dept. By US Federal law, it is illegal for me to be in Kuwait, except the President signs an annual waiver that in effect supports modern slavery. The US does have tons of resources, heck half of WY is US Navy Oil Shale reserves, the other half natural gas. Tree huggers however keep this from the market as well as trophy home owners prevent wind and wave power off Marthas Vinyard. Back to the ME, A US Navy supply ship came under fire from suspected pirates about 18 months ago. The Navy out ran and zigzagged away. Apparently getting shot at is not the level of proof required by our sitting president to shot back. The US is bankrupt. The crash of the dollar and stock market way past due. Our enemy is fighting the last war the US won, the cold war. Except in reverse. The bad guys are spending 20 cents for every $1M we spend. It worked to bring down the Wall, it will work to bring down the USA. And who really cares about S. Korea, they don’t have any oil like most of Africa we are letting kill each other off that doesnt have any. Except that Korea is an established 3-Star command that will never be budget cut that should the north decide to roll in it is going to take Naval and Air Power to start to slow the invasion by taking out the dictator in charge up north anyway. I say replace all the ground troops in Korea, save a dozen or so with their fingers on the trigger of the nuclear land mines we bury on the border on the way out. The 50,000 $8/hr jobs McDonalds just created should generate enough income tax to cover about 30 seconds of funding social security, assumes PETA does not blowup all the restaurants.

You got off track a bit, but the post is not bad. My point is that where we have troops and the econmy is good, let the host country subsidize the cost of the troops. Korea, Tawain, and Europe are examples. That will help reduce the deficit.---------- Okay, Saudi Arabia is not a dictatorship. It is a monarchy with dictatorial powers. Sorry my language is not as precise as it should be. The concept is the same. Would the US be better off with those in power or an Iranian clone? Think about the price of oil when you answer that question.------------------------------------------- I do not remember ever hugging a tree. Have you ever hugged an AK47 or an M-16 or whatever is used now? However, I do not want the water or land pollution, which could affect my health, from the extraction of this oil. Make it reasonable and we may be able to extract the product. Just out of curiousity, what is the cost of a barrel of this shale oil?----------------------------------------------------------------- The $8/hr Mac donalds jobs are not good for family people. They are good for high school part timers.

The amount of money that the US Government would save by adding a year to our 2 year Pay Freeze, changing the High 3 to High 5, and modifying our Health Benefit contribution will not reduce the trillions dollar deficit significantly enough to alter world economics. Yet, it makes good press media. The media and Congress plus Obama (or even McCain if he was President) are caught up in the feeding frenzy of Fed Employee Bashing. We still have an expensive set of wars going on, we still have over $4 heating oil and gas soon to be that, and we still have a Congress that is ineffective. McDonald's is hiring and that shows that America is still doing the fast food route and needing sugar, fat, and fries with that. Obama (not blaming him just stating fact) is all about the Why and rarely about the How. We need someone to start answering the call of Leadership of America. At one time I even entertained Donald Trump, now I will settle for Charlie Sheen. Anyone but the current bunch of knuckle draggers. America needs a more than a Wake Up Call, America needs a President and Congress working together to 'fix' America. We need to admit America is Broken, and all the Kings Men are unable to put it back together. Why? Because elitists (Kings Men) are not fixers. We need Honest Americans in Politics. We need Democrats, Republicans, Tea Partiers, Independents, Socialists, whatever who have the courage to do what is right. Politicians need to stop thinking about their next election and do the right thing. The right thing is their job. Their job is to protect and advocate for their Constituency -- as opposed to their "bribers" -- in America that is called Banks, Big Business and Cheney Types.

  • Misconceptions
    typical guy
The common misconception about McDonalds is that you shouldn't eat it. It doesn't matter if you eat there, so long as you don't eat a whole lot there. For example, you should never order a combo with a coke + fries. Only order the burger. Men under age 35 should never eat more than 2,000 calories unless they're doing very intense exercise daily. For women it's no more than 1,500. If you're older then you have to lower it further. A big mac is 540 calories, that's 1/4th of a man's total calories for the day and 1/3 of a woman's, so that's not terrible. Now if you order the combo (the smallest combo you can get is a medium), a medium coke is 210 calories and a medium fry is 380 calories. That adds another 590 calories to the meal for a total 1130 calories in ONE MEAL. That means a woman can have a small sandwich for lunch and a McDonalds meal for dinner with no breakfast and no snacks. A man can have more but this of course assumes that people are having this for dinner and not lunch then following it up with a heavy dinner. If a woman eats 2 big mac meals in a day, that's 2260 calories or 760 over the allowed amount per day. There are 3,500 calories in a pound of fat, so if she does this for 4 and 1/2 days, she gains one pound. I bring this up in regard to women because it's very confusing for them and quite sexist because the nutrition facts on products are always based on a 2,000 calorie diet so women that don't actually research (IE: google) the number of calories they should be eating would probably assume 2,000 is the limit when in fact it's 1,500. No wonder people have trouble losing weight in this country.

I would not be materially affected as I expect to be at least 62 when I retire. I am also CSRS. I am also close to maxxed out for retirement.----------------------------- FERS was set up to be as close, in payout, as possible to CSRS. I did see the light and refused to transfer to FERS because it is a lesser quality plan in my opinion. Now they want FERS people to pay almost as much money into their plan as CSRS people do (5% vs. 7%) but get a much lower benefit. Plus FERS people pay into social security. Some want to take away the FERS defined benefit plan for new employees. That guts the original concept of FERS.------------------------------------- I remember when my agency did not have enough people to do the job. That will happen again when the economy recovers and these "reforms" go through. I expect to be out of the government by then.

I've got almost 30 years in, so I'm trapped. I've always said the key benefit to a fed job is the pension, not the health insurance due to lack of medical or dental. Now the calculus is changing, which means that unless you're in a fed job with perks, you may be better off in private sector or self employed. Of course FBI agents will always desrable jobs, and they get paid very well. I doubt their net will suffer. But their secretaries might.

  • Good ol days for feds
    Ale
I really can't understand why politicians want to hack away at fed workers. The amount potentially saved is in no comparison to the damage they will do to our country. If things get really bad, the highly experienced will leave, either retire early, leaving a disruption in training employees downline or go to the private sector. Excellent experience is hard to come by. Those feds who have been loyal, working for years, will finally say enough is enough and leave the workforce. The excellent employees will be gone, leaving behind mediocre employees or ones that lack dedication. I don't think that the USA will be the super-power of the world for long. The politicians don't see the big picture and act more as bean counters. My brother who is a fed worker just got an offer from private industry that he says is quite an offer and may take the job. Highly specialized people are sought after. Beware Federal Governmant!!
