This new Congress, i.e., Tea Party members and their ilk, want to attach major social issues to the budget, hence the potential shutdown. New members in Congress, especially the House, aren't interested in the budget as much as they are interested in not funding Planned Parenthood and have no qualms about discriminating against women by preventing thousands of women from obtaining cancer screenings, family planning, and other counseling services. This includes teenage girls. The new members want the EPA to go away and forget about clean air standards. They want Obama to look bad because their hatred for him is palpable. My question is: What does this have to do with creating jobs in America? I think nothing. They campaigned on creating jobs for Americans and that has all turned out to be typical bait and switch for zealot politicians. What they're really after, as is clear in this budget battle, is to make abortion totally illegal, to make health care and family planning for women a thing of the past, to allow companies to pollute the air with no regulation, etc. These people know no shame. Meanwhile, federal workers stand to suffer, the American people stand to suffer, and the USA stands to be the laughing stock of the world. The next Congressional election can't come fast enough.

  • And in other news. . . .

Along the same lines, I heard a news story last night that Republicans are putting another demand on the table - cut all funding to clean up the Chesapeake Bay. Not only would that delay a budget agreement further, but if agreed to would destroy what is left of the economy of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Many families would lose their livelihood. I bet if those jobs were in China, the Republicans would be a bit more concerned about putting people out of work.

Yeah, it's all the Republicans fault. Nevermind that this budget was supposed to be completed last summer. You know, when the Democrats had complete control of both houses and the presidency. They had enough votes to do whatever they wanted...and they did nothing. So maybe you should put the blame where it really belongs.

  • About that majority

True some blame belongs on the previous Democratic congress. But don't forget that many budget items died in the Senate due to successful Republican filibusters, or because of anonymous holds placed on bills by Republican Senators. Fortunately, those holds are now against the rules. Unfortunately, that rule change comes a year late.

I agree that this budget crisis is an unfortunate combination of fiscal and social disagreements. At the moment they should just focus on fiscal issues so that can actually get a budget. BUT... you're not being honest about the Planned Parenthood issue. NO ONE is against cancer screenings, etc. It's all about Planned Parenthood's abortion services, which many people consider government-funded murder, and you know it. To gloss over that does nothing for this discussion.

Yeah, because killing a baby is so similar to killing a convicted murderer, or rapist, or whatever. Seriously.

Title X makes it illegal for federal funds to be used for abortions, therefore, any abortions provide by Planned Parenthood would not come from any federal funds received - they would have to come from other sources. It is about Planned Parenthood. It's about putting them out of business. But this has nothing to do with the federal budget.

Obama, Harry & Nancy should have been done last year when they had the majority of the house & Senate, but instead they procrastinated because of fear of the TEA and now they will pay the price, they need not blame others. We all know it has to be done might as well get started. Rather than accept that the democrats got pounded on Nov 2nd and their unwillingness to take a hit on a few billion in budget cuts, President Obama and Reid have signaled their willingness to shut down the federal government. This government shutdown is on Obama’s plate. He is the President. The Obama Administration decision to hold military pay hostage to the budget debate I believe is a first. For the last few decades, government shutdowns have been guided by an OMB directive issued during the Reagan Administration. Under this directive, military personnel would continue to receive the paychecks while politicians argued about the budget. The Clinton Administration, during the last government shutdown, kept the paychecks flowing. But, not Obama. The Obama Administration has overturned the old OMB directive and has decided to suspend military paychecks if there is a government shutdown. No reason to do it…but they have decided to. Reprehensible.

  • Mockery - Places to Volunteer
    LeGreatOne
Places to Volunteer: The Capitol Building, Washington, DC seeks volunteers to cypher-out a new Federal Budget. Those interested should have 3rd grade education or better, and be proficient in wranglin' Elephants and Donkeys. Ye Olde English Class System is back at work in the Republican Party. They want to be Kings, with a vast impoverished underclass to serve them. Don't be surprised if some states choose to secede from the Union to form their own little Kingdoms... This is a DANGEROUS situation. The potential for great harm does exist. One hopes our "Honorable" members of Congress will start working in the Public Interest, rather than their own.
