  • GOP Dream of Privatizing
    Richard729
The Republican goal has always been to privatize the government. Although not mentioned often they've been pushing to even privatize the military. As we learned during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars there were over 100,000 private contractors, most of them awarded no-bid contracts during the heyday of the Bush borrow-and-spend binge in which companies like Blackwater, now Xe, Halliburton, Bechtel and others who are paid whopping salaries compared to the all-volunteer military ranks. John Boehner stated earlier that he wants to see Social Security cuts + raising the minimum retirement age to 70 to pay for the Bush/Republican wars, the costs of which are north of $2 trillion. What a deal. Republicans got to rob our country blind while they were in power for 12 years with 6 years of total control of every lever of our government. Republicans never submitted one balanced budget nor did George W. Bush veto a single pork-filled budget, most of which went to the constituents who he referred to as the haves and have mores. Once they throw in the big cuts in the federal workforce by cutting and freezing pay, axing retirement benefits and health care coverage there won't be much left of the professional workers like medical fields, scientists and engineers who will no longer have any incentives to work for the federal government. Republicans are quick to blame the financial woes of our country on the public worker sector of our country. The truth is, it's the Republicans and their greedhead corporate swindlers who have sold our country out. Eighteen months and counting -- until these Republican swindlers and con artists will be tossed out on their sorry butts.

  • You give too much credit to the Republicans
    Valgys
Richard729, while I mostly agree privatizing everything isn't a good idea with government functions, especially something so directly connected to the public safety like the military, I think you're losing sight that the Republicans aren't solely to blame of what's going on here. You cast them as the source of all debt and using their past spending to justify future agendas. Don't forget Democrats like giving handouts, such as Social/S, pensions, and healthcare, the largest contributors to today's government spending next to the military (barely). Also you used the misnomer to describe our military as "all-volunteer." The US military gets paid, has retirement, free health care....what makes them all volunteers to you? And the "big cuts" that's being proposed - it's already happened under the Democrats watch. Look at NASA. Scientists and engineers are being laid off in droves while the current administration talks about protecting jobs and even stating that science is a high priority. The REAL truth is, Republicans took something for granted, the Dems ran with it trying to continue their handouts and the war that no one wants anymore, and the obvious solutions everyone wants will undoubtedly impact both the economy and government functions. Everyone will have to suffer now but no one wants to give any ground. Also side note - it was the common American that launched this economic crisis with the housing market. The "greedhead corporate swindlers" foolishly handed them the tools (i.e., loans and credits) to do it, and the government bailed them out (in both parties). Everyone was to blame.

are to blame. One is as bad as the other. Neither have the country's good as their foremost agenda.

why do you blame the Democrats for stiocking it to the fed workers. The Republicans are the ones sticking it to us. Look at the list of items that are listed here. All are addressed by Republicans. Look at Cato and the heritage Foundation. Surely you do not think they support Democrats.------------------------- This is not 1984 and we do not speak newspeak. The Republicans are at fault.

  • It's not just 'sticking' it to federal workers....
    Cathy
No one in Washington wants to fix government. The Republicans are going about it the wrong way, so are the Democrats. They (Dems) just want to give money away. There is no money. EVERYONE needs to pay their way and tighten their belts. This country is a republic, not a socialist state where 'everyone' has the right to whatever the Joneses have. The people getting 'stuck' are the ones who have worked hard and succeeded in life and are now having their paid in full taxes spent on socialist programs. I don't like not getting a raise or possibly being furloughed, but I'd rather have that than China owning more of us than they do now. We (the US) have got to get out of debt!!

    joral
Please explain how you are a moderate. Every posting you make seems to be anti-republican. Remember in America we are allowed to have different viewpoints without someone always making disparaging remarks. May I suggest "truth in advertising" and maybe call yourself "Liberal"? Here is how the Dems are to blame, last month’s deficit was over a $Trillion, more than the last year of a Republican president’s entire year. You can’t spend what you don’t have. I guess Bush made him do it.

  • Part 1 How are Dems to blame?
    LindaH
Joral, Yes we all have our own opinion, but lets be are real here. The reign of GWB and most of these republicans are the reason as to why the country is in a huge debt. President Obama came behind GWB and added more fuel to the fire by adding big $ to that huge debt. - Why are they crying now after 8yrs? - Have you not read what these people are proposing?- It's just like richard729 said, they want to privatize the Gov so that big businesses can run things, like for instance- SSN/retirement > ran by some big bank-Healthcare/medication> ran by some big insurance company.- Can you imagine if that happens insurance companies can run amuck with prices on healthcare and medication?- A lot of Americans have put their trust in these kinds of people as if they have the answers and will make things right, what a FREAKIN JOKE!! These republicans talk a good game, but they cannot FIX overnight what has taken years to create-These republicans have no real experience (as you can see and hear on the tele).

  • Part 2
    LindaH
They are moving way to FAST with no real common sense behind their way of thinking. -ryan and the rest of his reps gangsters will NEVER EVER fix this deficit, not now or EVER.-Im not a negative person, but things are ONLY going to get WORSE because there are a bunch of FAKE/MONEY GREEDY people who are playing with people lives. I know that private sector and the rest of these folks really dont care because they feel it doesnt pertain to them, I beg the differ, everything has a trickle effect- Last but not least, this trying to mess over the Fed Employees/Senior citizens/ education and other important items by trying to force their totalitarian plans> nothing republicans do will work because they dont have the peoples interest at heart. This is about them/money/ and the big wigs that put these types of republicans in for the sole purpose of their own gain and these republicans are willing to destroy for money... In a nutshell, Americans citizens are to blame and most of us are going to get what we asked for. I guess Obama made Americans do it.

  • Proposals affecting fed pay, benefits
    Badbone
What Congress, Senate and the President should do is take cuts in their pays, put the Congress & Senate in FERS instead of a special retirement fund and cut all of the perks they get. When they do that then the rest of the Federal workers would be more willing to go along with them on things. They go and freeze the low grade peoples wages but do not themselves take any hits. I for one am tired of Congress & Senate making everyone else pay while they sit back and enjoy themselves. Did you know that Congress and Senate are not under the regular government retirement system? Who do you know of that can vote themselves a raise?

  • no increases on capitol hill
    2tired
I agree with most of what Badbone has to say. If the rest of the government workforce is being forced to have their pay frozen, the same should apply to Congress & Senate. While some of the perks I have heard about seem ridiculous and should be cut, suggesting that the base pay be cut is pointless. Let's face it, the regular federal worker is not be happy about pay cuts being forced on them. In fact, even if the pay freeze gets abandoned, I believe that Congress & Senate should not receive ANY pay increases (including COLAs) until they have passed the budget each year. Or better yet, no pay increase unless the budget is passed in a timely manner (i.e, before September 30). Most agencies have policies in place that suspend pay increases (other than COLAs) if an employee does not perform. The way that I see it, passing the budget is a large part of their job; it is one piece of legislation that truly needs to be passed...even if no other legislation is passed during the year.

You darn right, -1) Where are their cuts? But they seek to cut Fed Employees- 2) Why do they get FREE medical and dental? But the rest (not rich) are force to pay high premiums to get it and oh, about to get our benefits changes for the reason of getting the country out it debt I mean, it's what congress say..lol - 3) Why is it allowed for them to work 3 days out of a week? But Fed Employees has to work 40 or more. 4} Why do they serve half a term and get $6,000 a months for retirement? But Fed Employees has to work 20 yrs or more to get less in retirement.- 5) Why are they not FIRED for not doing their job, on probation for 2 yrs and on a hiring freeze? But they seek to fire Fed Employees, create a law to put new employees on a 2 yr probation type deal and possibly force a 5 yrs freeze on no hiring for agencies. what stupidity)- 6) Why are they allowed to picket in front of the WH? Why are SUPERB IDIOTS like Palin allowed to get on national tele and run her giblets? But Fed Employees better not protest their rights to the nation, if so pay the price-I can go on and on, but you get the picture.

  • Thanks Mr. President
    joral
Let's remember how we got here. Unilaterally pass a trillion dollar health care bill without money to fund it and now instead of putting it on hold, cut federal workers pay and pensions to pay for it. This is squarely on the Democrats. All Washington politicians need a wake-up call. Both parties are out of touch and underestimate the working people of this nation. We will remember in 2012!

  • Pay Freeze
    FEDup2
With the price of gas going up daily, which will result in everything that is shipped in this country from groceries to everyday merchandise and utilities going up as well, how fair is it to freeze our salaries? Why not increase the tax of the super wealthy and stop attacking the middle class who are already struggling to survive? Pay banding, increase in health benefits costs, the rich get richer and the middle class gets poorer. Those who are of retirement age now are lucky...its an ideal time to get out of government service. For the rest of us, we'll be working into our 70's if we live that long. Very sad state of affairs.
