It's obvious we're getting our hair trimmed, but we don't know how much will be trimmed from our pay package. We already contribute more to our benefits that most state and local workers. It's pretty ironic that just the thought of people getting benefits anywhere near what we already get brings on near-riots and mayhem. Glad to see most Feds have kept calm with a wait-and-see attitude. I know we're all hoping for the best but the only way I see to bring the budget under control is to bring the troops all home.

  • Government Pensions
    metaxaide
If they eliminated pensions for the senate and congress, including retroactively, millions or billions could be saved. This would probably eliminate life-long legislators and produce a more representative government.

I doubt that your position is correct. Most of these people are wealthy and do not need the salary or pension. They get other benefits by being legislators.

Eliminating their pensions would save a lot of money and not all are wealthy but they seem to be when they leave office.

Do you honestly think that Congress / Senate will take up the notion to eliminate their pensions?---- C'mon Metaxaide, we live in a country where electives hide behind this so called Constitution.--- Congress / Senate can and has changed the laws to suit them, the rich and their supporters.- Congress / Senate has created a law whereas they automatically give themselves raises, but makes sure that the public or no one else can challenge that. They have created the laws so that "only" they can get FREE medical and dental by some justification.---- The very thing that Congress / Senate tries to fight against, I.E. Osama, Ben laden, and other radicals, if you sit and watch you'd see this so-called Congress / Senate are doing the very same thing only on sly level. They don't have to exterminate the people of this country like those men. No, they just do it by changing /create laws to kill the people.--- Quite frankly as far as I am concern, Congress / Senate is nothing more than gangsters who sits behind this so-called thing called the Constitution.--- I for one cannot fathom why Foreigners thinks it so great here? I plan not to get old here, when my hubby goes back to Europe, I am going with him. So dont waste your breath on thinking that Congress / Senate will change the laws to be fair for them and the citizens of this country. In a nutshell they will always create the laws Exclusively for themselves/the rich/their supporters. Enough said.

I’m not far from hitting my maximum annuity based on my years in CSRS, and I have a few friends who are already there. Pay freeze alone, not to mention coupled with high-5 would definitely remove the rather miniscule reason for staying past my 80%. I’m still a high performer in a job with influence and purpose, and I’ve ENJOYED my service to the nation. Sad to say that I won’t be in the bingo crowd at the office. I’m still young enough (started when I was 17) to either go where appreciated and can make a difference or enjoy my garden.

So here's a thought for the Congressional number crunchers . . . .The folks that are nearing retirement are hirer in grade than the folks that may (or may not if hiring freezes continue) replace them. So the longer we stick around, the longer we draw the higher salaries than the cheaper younger blood that will replace us. How does that figure into their formula?!

  • Retirement Cuts
    Linda
I am not a concerned about using the Top5 vs 3 as I am about the proposal to do away with the Defined Benefit Program for FERS. (I am FERS with 27 years in- Started March 1984) That is a huge cut in the pension total. I already put in over 15% of my own money for the TSP, get SSA (if it is still there), the but one that makes it a better benefit package is the pension................................. I am also concerned about the cost of litigation for both sides if applied to current employees. .....................................Or, if only applied to new hires, the lack of quality employees. In a good economy Government work isn't the highest paid, and the benefit package for long term thinkers is very good. Not a good idea Congress!

  • FERS Annuity
    Taxpayer Too
The proposed plan for doing away with the FERS Annuity would take place in 2013 and it would only be for those hired in 2013 and later. From what I understand it would not be taken away from anyone if you're already working for the Federal Government. It would no longer be a 3 legged stool like originally started. The FERS Annuity is the big reason why I stay since there aren't many companies that offer annuities anymore. It looks like quality in the govt. will be a thing of the past. What the private sector thinks of us is bad enough and now those elected officials are just adding to it. Maybe Congress should do away with those long long breaks they get every year!
