As the unrest in the Middle East continues, with 2 dead over night in Bahrain and riots continuing in Egypt. Lets look at this angle. To quell the masses (failed effort) in Egypt the administration was toppled after they offered up a 25% pay raise to civil servants. More recently in Kuwait (a dictator monarchy appointed by the British many years ago, who fired the entire elected administration in 2008 because he did not like the laws they were sending him), the Amir, handed out $3,600 to every pure blood Kuwaiti as Egypt started to explode. Over night the same king of the land and of all people (should I say what I am writing here downtown, I would be jailed), decided to give the Kuwait military and Kuwait Police a 100% pay raise, effective immediately. This raise did NOT extend to Egyptians in either force. Only to the pure blood Kuwaitis, who are (were) paid a whole lot more than the actual laborers I will add. My thought is the President and congress are never going to get all the guns out of the hands of fractured and splintered militia groups in the USA. So bribes like the 2% Social Security deal, go a long ways to keeping the masses from storming the White House. Supplementing this, apparently the highest paid military on the planet is going to get a 1.6% pay raise while Border Patrol (DEA and many others feds) armed agents continue to die in the line of duty. Smart man Mr Obama, keeping the military in his corner. Going to need it when a loaf of bread costs the servants who pay his salary $125.

Buy off the military, make them the beef eaters of 2000s, to defend the administration from the peasents. working well in Kuwait. Inflation and China are going to wipe out the $ value, bread may very well be $100 a loaf soon. Course a BMW will be 14 Trillion US$. Now if the USA just had a defendable border...

  • Less Government = Less Laws
    Greenfield
It's really simple -- if Congress wants less government, then they need to start to repeal laws, not cut budgets to make agency's mission attainment an impossibility. I hear constantly that "we're a nation of laws" -- if we have laws on the books then someone needs to enforce and administer them. If there is not, then they're largely meaningless. SO, the big question is what does Congress desire to do without? Drug laws, immigration laws, securities laws, criminal laws, labor laws, environmental laws.... Well? What does Congress want less of?

  • L.G. = L.L.
    NCFed
Greenfield, you may be on to something. Every, or nearly every, time new legislation is enacted new or ammended regulations are required, new SOPs are needed or need to be ammended, new taskings need to be assigned to existing employee groups or employees need to be reorganized to address the new requirements. Given the efforts by Congress and the Administration to freeze our pay (two years now perhaps five years tommorow) and reduce our numbers perhaps it's time to demand a freeze on new legislation (two years now, five years if the pay freeze is extended), and a repeal of existing laws in a percentage equal to the percentage of any reduction in force. Let's make sure that we have the personnel to enforce and administer existing laws and regulations before we allow the creation of any new laws and regulations.

  • cutting federal jobs
    marien
Until the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are over, other budget cuts aren't going to achieve anything except more unemployment, more unemployment benefits, ... I didn't hear Boehner say anything about cutting HIS staff and putting HIS staff on furlough. Ditto all the new Tea Party folks on the Hill. So, just who were the alleged 200,000? TSA employees, border patrol - all things the Republicans used to want. This is a dirty crowd in the House now - I've been around a long time an don't remember such arrogance. They have figured out the cycel - add and change laws and cut staff so that the government looks bad. Put as much as you can into a liquid savings account, folks, you're going to need it to live on when this fight gets even dirtier and the government is shut down.

  • What Dirty Crowd?
    Cindi
You talk about the new Tea Party folks as being the dirty crowd, and arrogance, what about a president that pushes Health Care on people who strongly disagree, the man basically said he would do it no matter what the people want, and Harry Reid stating he dident care what the people wanted they would not repeal Obama Health care, now that's arrogance.

  • "Push on"?
    Kythe
How did he "push it on you"? You are aware you can keep your current plan, right? Or do you want to be able to not have insurance, and freeload hospital services on someone else's dime? Oh, and for the record...most folks (according to polls) want most of the health care law's provisions to stay, and a strong majority don't want it defunded. Sounds to me like most of the "people" want what the President delivered. If you don't...welcome to democracy. Not always fun, but better than the alternative.

  • Polling?
    Cindi
Actually most folks according to polls donít want the health care laws to stay and I would say according to the recent election results the President has not delivered what the people of this county want. ------------- And yes I can keep my current plan, itís a good plan and I pay for it! (Over $5,000 a year for these benefits plus co-pays and deductibles) ---------------- The latest Rasmussen Report national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows that 56% favor repeal of the health care law, including 43% who Strongly Favor repeal. Forty percent (40%) oppose repeal of the law, including 27% who are Strongly Opposed. You can Google healthcare polling and see that in each poll most are against or opposed to the health care bill and want it repealed. ------- As for Democracy itís what this country is based on and what we try to use when we are not happy with what our President has chosen to saddle the citizens and generations to come with.

  • IRS Funding
    Briancpa
It should also be noted that for every dollar that is taken away from the IRS budget the treasury LOSES five dollars. Therefore, the way congress can make things even worse is to cut the IRS budget. (As I am sure they will).

  • IRS more FUNDING
    FED UP IRS FERS FED
Nicely said Briancpa. These potitical morons have no clue. Instead of lumping all Government agengies into the same basket regarding funding cuts, they should be looking very closely at every single governmental agency. Some agencies should see funding increases, some agencies should see funding decreases and some agencies should be eliminated period. As the old saying goes, you can't mix apples & oranges. Working for the IRS, I may be a bit biased but I have witnessed first hand over the last 24 years the ever decreasing bite of the IRS. Common sense dictates that this agency should be fully funded to collect the maximum taxes possible. If that were the case, then that would eliminate or reduce other related funding problems and the polititians can go back to what they are really good at, "wasting taxpayers money". It's a miracle that the IRS does what they do with what they have.

  • Agree
    Kythe
Look, the GOP had the majority of the 2000's to do something about the deficit, if they actually cared about it. They don't. This is about settling scores and pushing an ideological agenda. With Boehner saying "so be it" about job losses resulting from these cuts, it's clear where the priorities lie. And they aren't in line with the priorities of the American People.

  • Fed Jobs/IRS Cuts
    margarert
I completely agree with the comments above on IRS funding. It would be so nice to see these politicians actually look at Agencies INDIVDUALLY and carefully, instead of making a blanket decision to cut X number of jobs, freeze pay, furlough, etc. Our Congress makes, for less than 1/4 of the hours we put in, over $160K/year at a MINIMUM. Yet IRS workers, who bring money IN to the Government, who get bombed, yes, murdered, and just threatened, are being told that we have to do "more with less". What exactly do they think we've been DOING? We implement new tax laws, written of course by politicians, using obsolete equipment, fewer staff, and constant media/political abuse. We assist taxpayers with filing returns, understanding tax law, installment agreements, and a myriad of other things, in order to continue to bring in every dime possible. Most of us began our careers making 1/3 of the salary that our peers were making...just because we believed in our Government work. And now, after 20 years, many of us are finally making enough to live more than paycheck to paycheck, and still far less than the people sitting in Washington, D.C. There isn't one person I work with who turns off their computer after 8 hours - because we're going to work until the job's done. It's time for Federal workers to start contacting their Representatives. Explain how much money Feds bring IN to YOUR district, and remind them that we vote.
