  • The Department of State and the Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad

To Mike Causey Mike: I would be surprised if you ever heard of the US Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad. This small independent government agency (mini-size State Department) www.heritageabroad.gov in existence since 1985 could be easily incorporated into the State Department. Much of what the Commission does - signing cultural site preservation bilateral agreements and intervening when site desecrations occur duplicates the work of the State Department. In fact, the Commission is required to collaborate with State on negotiating agreements and when a desecration occurs abroad the Commission contacts our embassy and requests that the ambassador intervene with the host government. The value added is not there. So, I am proposing that this proposal to have the Commission absorbed by State be put on the table for review at a time when we are trying to save congressional appropriations. What do you think? Thank you. Regards, Katrina
