  • Innovation grows in OK to fail culture?

    This is an absurd theory which cannot be adopted government-wide. Can you imagine the FAA telling their Controllers it's OK to fail? I wouldn't want to be flying that day! Or telling commanders on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan it's OK to fail? According to this theory, after all the loss of life and money spent, just quit and forget about defeating the terrorists. Oh, and tell the Justice Dept lawyers to stop winning so many cases against drug dealers...they might hurt their feelings. Defense and the other agencies/departments should stop wasting the taxpayer's money on touchy-feely theories and spend it on something that will really work. You think you've heard it all then something like this comes along......

    Mother, I think you're misconstruing this. No one advocates plopping any old new idea directly into an operational safety system and see if anyone is killed as the primary methodology. That applies to air traffic controllers, and brake manufacturers, and airplane engine manufacturers, etc. etc. What is means is that the employees who are charged with coming up with new ideas, new products, new services, have got to be able to spend employer resources - including employee's time - and not have it demanded of them that nothing at that level ever fails. Google's - and 3M's, and other high-innovation companies - practice this by allowing a small portion of an employees time (which is an employer resource and cost, after all) to 'play' with new ideas - knowing that one blockbuster will pay for hundreds of 'failures' at that level.
