Foreign Service retirees should be flattered that they are valued and respected enough to be requested back to active service. On the other hand, us DOD employees were given the bum's rush, or "here's your hat, what's your hurry?." CSRS employees were especially targeted for harassment. In my former agency an office chief actually sent around an email asking when we would be eligible for retirement. Thinking it innocent, I foolishly replied with the exact date. "Management" subsequently used the information to sideline those of closest to retirement to "non-jobs." They tried to park us in corner cubicles with coloring books & crayons. I fought back and was branded a "non-team player." I would not work for them again if they offered me a $1,000/day retainer. If DOD agencies cannot treat their senior employees right, then they should not be surprised when their newly-hired "whiz kids" don't stick around.
